#905 - Zatanna returns
Only then did everyone shift their gaze to the girl who had been silent all along. They had, in fact, noticed her long ago.
This was not surprising, as the girl following Mr. Zatara possessed a beauty no less captivating than any of the women present, and even carried an inexplicable air of mystery, further enhancing her charm.
"My name is Zatanna Zatara."
Facing the simultaneous attention of so many people, Zatanna showed no signs of timidity. Instead, she introduced herself with poise.
"You can call me Zatanna or 'Lil Z'. You should be able to tell from the last name that I am Mr. Zatara's daughter."
In truth, even if Zatanna hadn't pointed it out, everyone could tell that she and Zatara had an extraordinary relationship. They both shared rare black-purple hair, and their taste in clothing was also similar.
"Lil Z is not only my daughter, but also one of my apprentices."
Zatara added with a smile, his pride practically overflowing.
"Lil Z is my most outstanding apprentice. At her age, even I was far less accomplished. After watching the recordings of your virtual training, I realized that magic is your biggest weakness right now."
"And since this mission is closely related to magic, I believe that with Lil Z's addition, you should be able to achieve even greater success."
Dick nodded. Their team indeed lacked a magic expert. The only two who could be considered somewhat knowledgeable about magic were Troy and Jackson, but they were only half-baked. He couldn't have asked for more than to have a magic expert voluntarily join.
However, not everyone thought the same way as he did. Just as there are people in this world who are superstitious about the occult, there are also many who are obsessed with science, like Wally.
"Really? A magician?" Wally whispered to Dick. "Our team doesn't need a vase who can only pull rabbits out of a hat."
"Come on, man," Dick rolled his eyes. "It's the 21st century, and the Justice League has been around for years. How can you still not believe in the existence of magic? You don't think Mr. Zatara is a charlatan, do you?"
"Of course not," Wally quickly waved his hand. "Isn't Mr. Zatara just someone with superpowers who deliberately portrays himself as a magician? I remember his real-world identity is a magician. I think he's doing it for more attention, right?"
Dick was amused by him. He joked, "I've only heard of people being superstitious about the occult before. This is the first time I've seen someone being superstitious about science. Do you guys have a church or something? If you do, who do you worship? Newton?"
Standing behind the two, Habie couldn't help but mutter in his heart. In his opinion, the science in the DC universe wasn't realistic either, so pot calling the kettle black.
Obviously, the whispers between the two not only attracted Habie's attention. Children always like to focus more attention on their peers, and Zatanna had been observing the team she was about to join.
Wally and Dick, who were whispering while her father was speaking, attracted her attention the most. Out of curiosity, even though she knew it wasn't right, Zatanna secretly used magic to eavesdrop on their whispers.
Although she didn't hear everything, Zatanna still heard Wally's distrust of magic.
Zatanna had received the most traditional old-school magic family education since she was a child. Although Mr. Zatara's open-mindedness prevented Zatanna from becoming someone who prioritized magic above all else, she still felt unhappy when the things she had learned since childhood were questioned.
The current Zatanna didn't have the maturity she would later possess. What's more, she had spent some time with Constantine before, which made her even more eccentric.
With a mischievous smile, Zatanna secretly drew a circle with the index finger of her right hand behind her back, and also muttered a few words in a low voice. An imperceptible wave quietly swam from behind her towards Wally.
Wally naturally couldn't detect the magic wave, but this little action obviously couldn't be hidden from Mr. Zatara. However, he naturally chose to turn a blind eye to his daughter's little prank.
It was also a good opportunity to teach those two boys who weren't listening carefully a lesson.
Wally, who had just finished discussing his values with Dick, was about to shut up when he felt someone pointing at his shoulder with a finger. He remembered that Habie was standing behind him, so he subconsciously asked in his mind.
'What's wrong, Habie?'
But what Wally found strange was that no one responded to him. Wally was not a patient person. Unable to get an answer, he immediately turned around.
However, the first thing Wally saw when he turned around was not Habie's familiar mutant face, but an exaggeratedly large spider, and it was close enough that Wally could even see the spider's fangs dripping with venom.
Wally's whole body broke out in goosebumps, and the Speed Force was activated to the extreme in an instant. He rushed to the corner of the hall in less than a second, and his scream came belatedly about a second later.
"Ah!"
The speedster's behavior frightened the unprepared children, and they looked around before discovering Wally hiding behind the sofa.
"So, what is it now?" Artemis frowned. She didn't know why, but she felt embarrassed by Wally's behavior.
"Hehe."
Zatanna was naturally happy to see her prank succeed. Just as everyone was feeling confused, Mr. Zatara stood up to explain.
"Wally was saying something down there just now, so Lil Z pranked him a little. Okay, Lil Z, stop laughing and apologize to Wally."
"Sorry, I didn't expect you to be so scared by an illusion."
Zatanna explained with a smile, but the more she explained, the more embarrassed Wally felt.
"Alright, let's get back to the mission."
Batman's cold voice ended all topics, and everyone immediately became quiet, listening attentively like a group of students with their hands behind their backs.
"Regarding the details of magic, you can wait until the mission to have Zatanna explain them to you. The Justice League's assessment of the difficulty of this mission is not high, so I agree with your approach of splitting into two teams."
"So, how will you divide the teams?"
"I'll lead one team, and Jackson will lead one team," Dick said, stating the distribution they had just discussed. "As for the members, we haven't decided yet."
"Ten minutes, discuss everything and then report back to me," Batman said.
"If you exceed the scheduled time, then Mr. Kent's mission will be handed over to the Justice League. The Young Justice League will focus on the missions of Red Arrow and Dr. Roquette."
"It won't take ten minutes," Dick said confidently.
