#14 - Chapter 14: The Bloodscab King (Part 2)

The two guards didn't stand on ceremony and started gnawing on the chicken legs. One said, somewhat indistinctly, "Of course, it's our King Aerys II. A few years ago, there was the rebellion in Duskendale. He was held captive by the rebels for more than half a year, and then he went mad. I heard that all the prisoners in King's Landing are executed by burning. Some say his body is covered in cuts from the Iron Throne, hence the nickname 'King Scab.' But people prefer to call him 'The Mad King Aerys.' Some even say the Iron Throne is rejecting the king, but who really knows? Little Garon, your roast chicken is amazing! With this skill, why be a blacksmith? Wouldn't being a cook be better?"

Aerys II Targaryen, 'The Mad King' and 'King Scab.' He was the seventeenth of the Targaryen dynasty, crowned on the Iron Throne in 262 AC (After Conquest). He married his own sister, Rhaella Targaryen. Of their children, only Rhaegar and Viserys survived; the others died in infancy.

Liu Yuan felt he had the most to say about this. Given the current state of hygiene in Westeros, the infant mortality rate was inherently high. Even he, with his strong body, had been sick before, and without any medicine, he had to rely on his constitution to pull through. Moreover, the Targaryens practiced incestuous marriage, so it was normal for them to have children with health problems.

Aerys II was irritable and capricious even when he was young, and he was also quick to tire of things, both in politics and with women. As he grew older, Aerys became increasingly jealous, suspicious, and cruel, with a quick temper.

Especially after the Defiance of Duskendale, these traits became more and more apparent. Eventually, Aerys became obsessed with burning people alive, and he became increasingly cruel and unpredictable, including his fascination with fire. He loved a mysterious and highly flammable substance—wildfire. Stored in fruit-shaped jars, he liked to burn people alive. People say that it was the Defiance of Duskendale that completely drove King Aerys mad.

Since the Defiance of Duskendale, the king hadn't left the Red Keep for a full five years. His sudden decision to attend the tourney at Harrenhal was something no one had expected.

Listening to the horns sounding around him, Liu Yuan climbed to the highest point of the Wailing Tower. The walls at the top of the tower were cracked in many places, and the wind whistled through the gaps, making a 'woo-woo' sound. Standing at the top, he could see the crowds surging towards the gate, including many brightly dressed nobles.

Liu Yuan's eyesight was no worse than a telescope, allowing him to clearly see the scene in the distance. As the royal procession appeared in the city, countless flower petals were poured down from the city walls, fluttering and falling. It could only be said that Lord Whent was a very capable person. The royal procession entered Harrenhal in a grand manner, greeted by countless cheering people on both sides of the road. Among them were nobles and knights, as well as soldiers, and of course, even more servants and attendants posing as commoners.

The three knights at the head wore rose-gold heavy plate armor, and the red three-headed dragon on their chests was the sigil of House Targaryen, riding tall, armored horses. Behind them were heavily armed infantrymen carrying banners, their ranks orderly, their armor mainly scale armor and studded leather armor.

Then came a valiant young knight, accompanying the king's carriage. He wore no helmet, and his long silver-white hair fluttered in the wind. The young man had a very handsome appearance, and his black armor was also quite magnificent.

The wide royal carriage was covered with wooden curtains on all sides, only vaguely revealing a seated figure inside. It should be Aerys II, known as 'The Mad King.' Behind the king's carriage were also two knights in rose-gold armor.

Liu Yuan was too far away to hear what they were saying, of course. But he could see that everyone, including Lord Adrian and the Stark siblings, were kneeling in salute. And the silver-haired youth accepted it without hesitation, indicating that his status was very unusual, probably a crown prince or something similar.

However, the king did not get out of the carriage. Surrounded by a crowd of nobles, the carriage drove directly to the Tower of Kingswood. He really didn't know what Lord Whent was thinking, arranging a king who loved to set fires in the Tower of Kingswood. Was he not afraid of being taboo?

Due to the angle, he couldn't see what happened next. But it didn't matter, it had nothing to do with a small figure like him. What he was really interested in were the five knights in rose-gold armor. They should be the Kingsguard! Reputedly selected from the most outstanding warriors in the Seven Kingdoms, they should represent the strongest combat power in Westeros.

Liu Yuan figured that the castle would be busy for a while preparing for the king's arrival, at least holding a banquet or something. Since he had nothing to do at the moment, he simply ran to the east gate to inquire with the guards about the Kingsguard.

Liu Yuan naturally wouldn't go empty-handed when trying to get close to people, carrying a jar of ale. This brown barley ale was a specialty of the Riverlands, which Liu Yuan had exchanged for roast fish and wild pheasant from the cellar manager. He had tasted it, and the ale was different from beer, with a slightly lower alcohol content of about 6%, and a slightly different taste. Ale tasted lighter, sweet, and had a unique aroma.

Their production process was basically the same. Both beer and ale need to be made through fermentation. The fermentation process is the process of converting sugar into alcohol by yeast. However, the brewing cost of ale is higher, and its raw materials are generally barley or wheat, which are directly brewed; the raw materials of beer generally include wheat, barley or rye, and some beers may also add other ingredients.

In recent days, Liu Yuan had become well acquainted with the guards of the castle, especially since he also brought ale and dried fish snacks. As a blacksmith's apprentice, Liu Yuan would also help the guards maintain their weapons and equipment. Everyone liked this sensible child, and even the captain of the guard simply ignored the rules and let him do as he pleased.

Everyone greeted him with a smile: "Haha, Little Garon, you're here at the east gate today!"

"Hehe, Little Garon, did you bring anything good?"

Liu Yuan raised the basket in his hand: "I made my own dried fish and meatballs, and there's wine too!"

A strong man picked up the wine jar and took a deep sniff: "Tsk tsk, good wine! Little Garon, where did you get this wine? You didn't steal it, did you?"

Liu Yuan: "Hmph, Captain Filly, what are you talking about? I exchanged this from Rolin, and even the steward knows about it! I'm not giving you any of this wine."

Captain Filly smiled helplessly: "Hehe, Little Garon is angry. Okay, okay, it's my fault. Here, this is for you as an apology." As he spoke, he took out a handful of copper coins and handed them over. Liu Yuan took them and weighed them in his hand, about fourteen or fifteen coins, and put them directly into his pocket without ceremony.

Everyone happily gathered around, and Filly kicked them a few times on their butts, scolding with a smile: "Go back and line up, no manners at all. Everyone gets a share, there's enough for you."
