#35 - Chapter 35: What I Saw Along the Way

Three days had passed since leaving Crab Island, and he had quickly put those messy things behind him. Life on the ship was monotonous, but fortunately, this merchant ship belonged to the Setigar family. As the second young master of the current family head, even the captain had to be respectful to him, and the rude sailors dared not underestimate this child.

On the contrary, Liu Yuan often approached them, as he was quite interested in the shipbuilding and navigation technology of this world. The shipbuilding level was slightly better than that of 16th-century Europe, but the development speed was quite slow. It was said that ships from three or four hundred years ago were not much different from the current ones. At the same time, in terms of navigation technology, the compass and the seven-star ruler (similar to a sextant) had been invented, making long-distance navigation possible.

The three-masted sailing ship he was on was the most popular type of ship nowadays. The sailing speed was about eight knots, which translates to less than five leagues (fifteen kilometers) per hour, which was already the fastest speed. But to reach Oldtown on the other side of the continent, it was necessary to cross the Narrow Sea, pass south through the Stepstones into the Summer Sea, make a brief supply stop at Sunspear, the capital of Dorne, and then continue sailing west. In the Redwyne Straits near the Arbor, turn north into Whispering Sound, and finally arrive at Oldtown at the mouth of the Honeywine River. The entire voyage would take more than 50 days.

Within a few days of boarding the ship, Liu Yuan became acquainted with the people on board. He now had some assets, and he scattered a lot of copper coins. The sailors were very happy to answer the young master's questions, allowing Liu Yuan to learn a lot about the sea, myths from various places, and some rumors from the Eastern Continent.

Usually, when he had nothing to do, he would sit on the deck fishing. When he was interested, he would change into a coarse cloth shirt and participate in the work of the sailors, which he also enjoyed. Sometimes he would throw the sea fish he caught directly into the kitchen for the sailors to add a dish.

One day, the atmosphere on the ship suddenly became a little tense. The captain came to Liu Yuan and said, "Young Master Garon, we are approaching the Stepstones, an area where pirates often appear. For your safety, I hope you can return to the cabin."

Liu Yuan waved his hand and said, "Do your own thing, don't worry about me. Now that I'm on the ship, my fate is naturally tied to yours. You should have heard that I have killed more than a dozen robbers. If they dare to come, I'd like to see what level the pirates are at." He patted his sword as he spoke.

The captain didn't say much when he saw this and had to rush back to arrange work. As for the sailors on the ship, this was their livelihood. There was tension, but not fear. Sure enough, they encountered pirates the next day, following far behind the merchant ship. Liu Yuan had good eyesight and could see that it was a longship, powered entirely by the oarsmen and a triangular sail. He roughly judged that there shouldn't be many people on board, no more than 60 people including the oarsmen.

The pirate ship followed far behind the merchant ship for several hours, and never found a flaw in the merchant ship. Perhaps considering that the potential losses might be great, they finally stopped and disappeared into the distance. The journey was uneventful, and the merchant ship arrived at Sunspear, full of exotic customs.

Dorne is the least populous of the Seven Kingdoms. Due to the historical migration of the Rhoynar and the relatively isolated environment, the Dornish are significantly different from other Westerosi in culture and ethnicity. The Dornish accepted many Rhoynar customs on the basis of their original Andals.

The Dornish are known for their passion and sexual openness. Dorne is also the hottest region in Westeros, stony, mountainous, arid, and barren, and possessing the only desert on the continent. Areas with rivers are fertile, and even in long summers, there is enough rain and other water sources to ensure that Dorne is still suitable for human habitation.

The capital, Sunspear, is built of brown clay and straw (like the adobe bricks common in northwestern China). It is located on the easternmost end of a sandy peninsula, surrounded by the sea on three sides and adjacent to the Shadow City on the west.

Threefold ramparts surround the castle and wind through the Shadow City. The three gates, arranged in sequence, provide easy access to the inner city. Visitors can pass directly through the threefold ramparts to reach the Old Palace without having to navigate the labyrinthine town. The Spear Tower and the Sun Tower rise from the Old Palace, respectively marking the Martell's spear and the Rhoynar's sun.

The Sandship, originally the ancestral castle of the Martell family before Nymeria landed in Dorne, is now part of Sunspear. Its shape resembles a large sailing ship washed ashore and turned to stone.

The Shadow City to the west, in Chinese terms, should be the outer city, extending westward from Sunspear's huge ramparts. Connecting to the port in the south, a large number of adobe brick shops and windowless hovels cling to the foot of the city, some with their own walls. New houses are attached to the walls of their neighbors. Repeatedly, year after year, the Shadow City has grown to its current size.

The Setigar merchant ship docked here to replenish supplies. They were to rest here for one night. The houses in the Shadow City, mostly built of adobe bricks, remained cool even under the scorching sun.

Although the Dornish call it a city, its size is at most a peculiar, simple town. The facilities are quite complete, with stables, inns, taverns, and brothels further west. The narrow streets and alleys in the city are intricate, like a maze.

The market is full of spices from Dorne and the more eastern continent. Liu Yuan saw dark-skinned people, said to be natives from a place called the Summer Isles in the south. As for the Dornish locals, Liu Yuan felt that they were more like Turks who believed in the church, retaining a large number of nomadic traditions and customs.

The main body of the Dornish is a mixed race of First Men, Andals, and Rhoynar. The continent divides the Dornish into three types: Sand, Stone, and Salt. The Stone Dornish mostly live in the mountains and are tall. They are descendants of the Andals and the First Men, and are mostly brown-haired or blonde.

The Sand Dornish, who live in the desert, and the Salt Dornish, who live by the sea, have inherited more of the Rhoynar's slender physique, with smooth olive skin, black hair, and dark eyes. The Dornish are tenacious, indomitable, and brave. The Targaryen family launched countless wars, using all means, including dragons. It took a full one hundred and eighty years to bring Dorne into the rule of the dynasty. But not by iron and fire, but by relying on two carefully arranged marriages, plus a solemn treaty guaranteeing the title and privileges of the Prince of Dorne and respecting local Dornish laws and customs. So the other families are dukes, only the Martells are princes. Dorne has since maintained a close alliance with the Targaryen family, and the Martell family has always firmly supported the royal family during the kingdom's rebellion.

Liu Yuan, under the protection of the sailors, also had a good stroll around the market. This young master was generous! The rewards he gave were all silver coins. For the sake of the silver stags, the sailors and guards scrambled to be Liu Yuan's followers.
