#37 - Chapter 37: Bachelor's Path
Inside the Archmaester's Hall was a large hall with stone floors and high arched windows. The rooms on both sides of the hall were administrative offices, and at the end of the passage was a high platform, on which sat a gatekeeper responsible for receiving all those who wished to see the Archmaester. In the basement of the Archmaester's Hall was a cell where those who committed minor crimes, such as apprentices and assistant scholars, or servants who stole from the kitchen, were locked up as punishment.
Usually, a large number of scholars served in the Citadel, and most of those who stayed here were those who were devoted to research. If a scholar's knowledge in a certain field could be called a 'master,' then he would be awarded a ring, scepter, and mask corresponding to that field, as well as the title of 'Doctor,' to recognize his expertise.
Within the Archmaester's Hall were many subordinate institutions of the Conclave, responsible for the specific day-to-day management of the Citadel. Liu Yuan and the others went to the Records Office; the notice he received on Crabb Isle was just a notification. The specific letter of special admission was still kept here, and Liu Yuan also needed to register for enrollment here.
The attending scholar, recognizing that this kind of apprentice was from a noble background, was not someone he could easily manipulate. He did not make things difficult for Liu Yuan or ask for benefits; he readily completed the enrollment procedures for him.
Liu Yuan was assigned to study under Archmaester Marwyn. New students would be assigned a mentor by the Citadel. Archmaester Marwyn was one of the most senior scholars in the Citadel and was said to be on the verge of being promoted to Doctor.
Next was the arrangement of accommodation. Assistant Scholar Hilly led Liu Yuan to his new residence: a room on the fourth floor of the Ninth Tower, bordering the edge. This was to be his residence for the next few years.
Because it was near the corner, the room had two windows with wooden frames set with amber and green glass. The lighting here was excellent, without the cold, gloomy feeling typical of castles.
Students who had just arrived to receive education at the Citadel were called apprentices. Each room would be arranged to accommodate two apprentices. At this time, there was already a roommate in the room named Pylos Riverwood, from the Riverlands.
He was a somewhat silent young man, three or four years older than Liu Yuan. He had enrolled at the beginning of the year and had been studying with his mentor for more than half a year. Pylos did not like to talk much and did not react particularly to Liu Yuan's arrival. Liu Yuan was very astute; he could tell at a glance that Pylos did not come from a good background and would unconsciously feel inferior when facing a noble like him.
The next day, Liu Yuan met his mentor, Archmaester Marwyn. How should I put it? He shattered his preconceived notions of intellectuals. He was short and stout, but his chest and shoulders were very strong, and he had a round beer belly. A thick neck plus a broad chin, a prominent forehead, a nose that may have been broken more than once, and teeth that were mottled red.
Disorderly white hairs sprouted from his ears and nostrils, making him seem very unkempt, and he bore a seven-point resemblance to the dwarf Bombur. It was the nine colorful chains around his neck that represented his academic achievements.
Liu Yuan also met his other three fellow students. The one who impressed him the most was the gaunt-faced assistant scholar. His name was Qyburn, and he majored in mysticism and medicine. It was said that he had recently submitted an application to be sworn in as a full scholar.
Despite Archmaester Marwyn's sloppy appearance, his teaching level was quite good. He quickly developed a study plan for Liu Yuan, warning him not to delve into overly profound knowledge at the beginning, but to start with relatively simple literature and history. The two assistant scholar brothers usually had their own research projects and were rarely seen.
Mentor Marwyn was working on his book, 'Lost Books.' According to Senior Brother Qyburn, the mentor had traveled to the Eastern Continent twice to complete this book, suffering many injuries along the way, nearly dying there.
Liu Yuan also chose his preliminary subjects of study: 'Astronomy,' 'History,' and 'Metallurgy.' These three disciplines had quite a few branches, and the knowledge they touched upon was enough for him to study for a long time.
