#52 - Chapter 15: Battle of the Paradise Tower (I)

Just as Eddard Stark arrived at the Red Keep, it had already been subdued, with countless red-cloaked soldiers cleaning up the corpses. Eddard entered the throne room to find Jaime Lannister sitting on the Iron Throne, looking dejected. Several bodies lay on the ground around him, including that of Aerys II Targaryen, with Jaime's sword still embedded in him.

Then, Lord Tywin had three bodies wrapped in red cloth brought out, the mangled remains of Rhaegar's wife, Princess Elia Martell, and their two children. Amory Lorch dragged the young Princess Rhaenys from under the bed and stabbed her nearly a hundred times; Gregor Clegane crushed Elia Martell's son's head in front of her before brutally raping and murdering her; and little Prince Aegon's head was smashed, leaving the Targaryen family nearly extinct.

Such cruel actions were unacceptable to Eddard Stark, who had been raised with a knight's code of honor.

However, Robert Baratheon gladly accepted the Lannister family's allegiance, even pardoning Jaime's act of regicide on the spot, and neglecting to pursue justice for the atrocities committed by Gregor Clegane and others.

This led to a heated argument between Eddard Stark and Robert, and in a fit of pique, Eddard led his forces south to relieve Storm's End. He was still an upright young man deeply influenced by knightly ideals, while Robert Baratheon was already a seasoned politician. He knew what was beneficial for him, and this marked the first conflict between their principles.

In the southern region of Dorne, castles dotted the Red Mountains, including Blackmont, High Hermitage, Stonehelm, Skyreach, Starfall, Wyl, and Yronwood. On the eastern side of the mountains lay the ruins of the Tower of Joy and the Eyrie.

Today, the Tower of Joy received some uninvited guests. Ever since Prince Rhaegar eloped with Lyanna, they had secretly married. Afterward, they lived secretly in the Tower of Joy until King Aerys II sent his Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Gerold Hightower, to retrieve Rhaegar.

Fulfilling his duty as a Targaryen prince, Rhaegar returned to King's Landing but left Gerold, Ser Arthur Dayne, and Ser Oswell Whent to guard Lyanna at the Tower of Joy.

Seven men climbed the hillside to the not-so-tall tower that stood there. Three Kingsguard knights stood guard outside. Ser Oswell Whent was kneeling on the ground, head bowed in prayer, Ser Arthur Dayne sat on a rock sharpening his sword, and Lord Commander Gerold Hightower stood silently, facing the approaching men.

It seemed the three had learned that the Dragon dynasty had been overthrown, yet they still guarded the Tower of Joy, fulfilling their vows to the Kingsguard.

Oswell Whent and Arthur Dayne picked up their helmets and walked to Gerold Hightower. Arthur Dayne thrust his sword into the ground and gave a knightly salute: "Lord Eddard Stark, hello, it's been a long time."

Eddard Stark looked at the Kingsguard and said, "I didn't see you at the Battle of the Trident. I didn't expect to find you here."

Arthur Dayne said, "Regrettably, we couldn't be there."

Oswell Whent interjected, "Hmph, if we had been, it would be your usurper friend lying on the ground."

Eddard Stark retorted, "But the Mad King is dead, and Rhaegar is dead. Why didn't you protect your king?"

Gerold Hightower said, "The King ordered us to stay here."

Eddard Stark questioned, "Where is Lyanna? Where have you hidden my sister?"

Gerold Hightower pointed to the Tower of Joy behind him, saying, "Lady Lyanna is inside. Um, she is unwell and can only rest in bed."

Eddard, anxious, was about to step forward, but Gerold Hightower stopped him, saying, "I am sorry, Lord Stark, you cannot pass. We are under the King's orders to guard this place."

Eddard said, "The war is over. Your duty is over. There's no need for us to fight."

Gerold Hightower was silent for a moment, then slowly said, "No, our duty is not yet over. Since the day we swore our oaths, our fate has been to fight to the death for the King's command. Draw your swords!" He then placed his Kingsguard helmet on his head, and the other two did the same. Arthur added, "Lord Stark, I wish you good fortune in future battles."

Eddard Stark: "No, you are wrong. The war is over, and the people will no longer suffer the ravages of war! Draw your swords!" The sound of blades being drawn filled the air.

Although the young Northern lords were young, they were formidable warriors. Having been tempered by the fires of war for the past two years of the rebellion, they exchanged glances and quickly arranged their tactics.

Howland Reed, Willam Dustin, and Ethan Glover would face Gerold Hightower; the stronger Martyn Cassel, Theo Wull, and Mark Ryswell would restrain the most powerful "Sword of the Morning" Arthur Dayne; and Eddard would face the weaker Oswell Whent. Whichever side finished their battle first would immediately assist their companions.

All of Westeros had calmed down, and lords from all over were flocking to King's Landing to pledge allegiance to the new king. However, Dragonstone, guarding the Blackwater Bay and the approaches to the Narrow Sea, remained a threat to King's Landing.

After the surrender of the South, the fleets from Oldtown and the Arbor had turned their guns and were now facing the Dragonstone fleet. Stannis received a new order from Robert to rebuild a Baratheon royal fleet at Storm's End.

Perhaps Robert was truly blessed by the world, as the scholars at the Citadel who studied meteorology and astronomy had concluded that the long winter would end this year, and the continent's climate would return to normal. Even in the North, the winters would not be too cold. Many believed that Robert's ascension to the Iron Throne was his destiny.

Meanwhile, in the South, a little-known battle was taking place. Although Oswell Whent was a renowned knight, Eddard's fighting skills were also very strong, and the two fought fiercely, with Eddard even gaining an advantage.

On the other side of the battle, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard Gerold Hightower was almost fifty years old. He was already struggling to fight three young men alone, and at the cost of being stabbed in the lower back by Howland Reed's spear, he injured Ethan Glover's arm. Howland Reed used the crannogmen's unique frog spear, the barbs tearing off a large chunk of flesh, and blood stained his white cloak red. Even so, he heavily smashed Willam Dustin to the ground with a sword. Had it not been for his companion's timely rescue, Willam might have been the first to die.

And Arthur Dayne, the strongest warrior on the field, still seemed to have plenty of energy even while fighting three people. Martyn Cassel, Theo Wull, and Mark Ryswell were among the most powerful young warriors in the North, yet they couldn't defeat Arthur alone. Arthur Dayne's legendary sword "Dawn" was also known as a weapon comparable to Valyrian steel. With a powerful slash, he severed Mark Ryswell's steel shield along with his left hand, and with a raised leg, he delivered a fierce kick "Boom!" Blood splattered as the armored boot directly kicked Mark's head, causing it to explode.

Eddard went berserk after seeing his comrade die a gruesome death (it was really gruesome!). He then launched a series of fierce attacks before tackling Oswell to the ground. He drew the dagger from his waist and stabbed it hard into Oswell's eye socket. The blade pierced the eyeball and went straight into the brain, and Oswell immediately lost his life.
