#66 - Chapter 29: Pike Island Attack and Defense (Part 2)

The entire harbor town was in chaos, and at this moment, the fleet on the sea made new moves. Many warships began to slowly sail towards the harbor, while more ships lowered countless small boats. On them were soldiers with greatly boosted morale, roaring as they charged towards the shore.

Just then, a wide, flat-topped warship smashed through the wreckage of ships blocking its path and directly rammed onto the pier. The ship's thick front deck flipped open, slamming heavily onto the dock. Countless armored warriors surged off the ship, unlike the hot-blooded soldiers, they were silent and calm, maintaining their formation.

They were heavy infantry composed of the Unsullied, with three hundred crossbowmen armed with heavy crossbows behind them. Finally, there were the elite guards of House Celtigar in chainmail, Adrian and Becot, wearing crab armor, ascended the soil of Pyke Island in their midst.

The Celtigar warriors quickly controlled several nearby streets, unexpectedly refraining from looting, instead protecting the craftsmen inside. Lordport was famous for its forges and metalworkers, who could produce high-quality swords, axes, ringmail, and plate armor, and Lordport had many famous shipbuilders from Westeros. These craftsmen were valuable assets and one of Liu Yuan's main objectives this time.

This was also agreed upon in advance, Adrian decided to fully support Liu Yuan in establishing a new force. Becot was still reveling in the joy of receiving his new armor, eager to find two enemies to chop. By the way, Liu Yuan forged sigil swords mixed with Valyrian steel for them.

They quickly cleared the landing site, all the remaining defenders fled from here, escaping into the depths of Pyke Island, leaving behind a wooden fortress billowing smoke. Then, the Royal Navy's flagship, Fury, slowly sailed into the harbor.

Surrounded by a large group of nobles, Robert Baratheon, in full armor, stepped off the ship, carrying his oversized hammer. Behind him was Duke Eddard, who had matured from a boy into a steady and composed man after many years, followed by a large number of Crownland soldiers disembarking from the ship. Robert pointed to the smoky harbor and said, "I didn't realize before that Earl Adrian was so capable. It seems we should entrust him with some more important tasks? Look, they're coming."

Adrian led his two sons to the pier to greet them. The most eye-catching thing was the matching armor worn by the three of them, which amazed everyone. They had never seen such beautiful armor. Behind the King, Jaslyn Bywater, who was recommended by Barristan, served as Robert's bodyguard. He was looking at the golden figure among them with resentful eyes, that person was Liu Yuan. Robert laughed loudly, "Earl Celtigar, you have done well. Where are those Ironborn scum? Didn't I say to destroy this place?"

Adrian respectfully said, "Your Grace, those rebels, intimidated by your might, have already fled. I considered that the army needs a temporary foothold. Moreover, to attack Pyke, we should build some siege engines. There are many craftsmen and materials here that should be useful."

Robert patted him on the shoulder and praised, "Well done, you are still the most thoughtful. Ser Groover, I order you to take six hundred soldiers and sweep through the entire Pyke Island for me. If you encounter anyone who dares to resist, kill them all, and put their heads on the road! Let everyone see the consequences of betraying the kingdom. Ned, let's go! Let's see the Ironborn's last fortress, I want to see what Balon, that old fellow, dares to rebel."

Then, surrounded by a group of noble generals, they rode to Pyke Castle on the southwest coast of the island. Pyke Castle is an ancient fortress, originally built on a promontory cliff protruding from the sea. But later, as the rock supporting the cliff was constantly eroded, some rocky mountains, along with the buildings on them, collapsed. All its towers, walls, and bridges are made of gray-black stone covered with green lichen.

The headland where the stone bridge leading to the largest island was located was blocked by high walls, forming an outer fort. Stables, beast pens, and living reserves were on the headland, and the main fort, kitchen fort, and blood fort each occupied an island. The castle now only has three barren islands and twelve giant rock-supported towers left, gradually isolated on fragile and crumbling reefs, surrounded by salty seawater all year round. Since then, Pyke Island has been unable to dock ships. If you want to go to Pyke Castle, you must first dock the longship on the nearby shore of Lordport.

Lordport is very close to Pyke Castle, and at this time, many of the defenders have retreated back to the castle. This reflects the benefits of Liu Yuan protecting the craftsmen before. Under the supervision of the soldiers, they demolished some houses in Lordport. Using the materials they dismantled, they quickly built twelve large catapults and ten siege vehicles. They also built some huge shield carts to defend against enemy arrows. It's not that they couldn't build more siege equipment, it's just that the periphery of Pyke Castle was not big enough to accommodate them all.

At this time, inside Pyke Castle, in the main fort built on the largest island, it is connected to other fortresses by rocky walkways. Inside the smoky long hall, a giant sea monster carved from a dark, shiny boulder is the Seastone Chair passed down through generations of Ironborn.

King Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands sat on it, his face very ugly at this time, so gloomy that it was about to drip water. Below him were his wife, children, and seven brothers. He did not expect his dream to be shattered so quickly, the revenge from the Iron Throne had already hit his eyes, and the longship fleet that the Ironmen were proud of was also completely destroyed. Balon was unwilling to admit his defeat. There were currently 1,600 soldiers in Pyke Castle, and he felt that he still had a chance to fight.

Balon scolded them, "What are you panicking about? The enemy hasn't even entered yet! Didn't Stannis hold Storm's End for more than a year a few years ago? We have more soldiers than him now. As long as we drag it out until they can't hold on and retreat, we will win! Maron, go to the outer fort and hold it for me. Even if all the soldiers are dead, you are not allowed to retreat a step. Harron, Quenton, Donnel, and Urrigon, you guys go too." His brothers looked at him and followed Maron out.

Several vassals who retreated into the castle with him had very bad complexions, especially Sawane Botley, whose territory was Lordport. Sawane rolled his eyes and thought to himself: Your few broken towers are worthy of being compared to Storm's End? How much food do you have stored? I know better than you, enough for the people here to eat for ten days at most, what are you defending? But he didn't say anything.

Before long, a huge noise was heard "Boom~!", and even the castle under their feet felt the vibration. Balon stood up abruptly and shouted, "What's going on? Someone go see what happened!" Before he could finish his words, there was another loud "Boom"! Even dust fell from the ceiling of the hall.

Euron Greyjoy ran in and shouted to the people in the hall, "It's a catapult! The Royal Army has launched an attack!"

Balon waved his hand: "Everyone be quiet! Take the children to the Blood Keep, the catapults shouldn't be able to reach there."

The Royal Army had already launched an attack. The headland separated by the outer stone wall was very large, close to fifty acres. The vast majority of the troops in the city were here, and a tall iron gate protected the second layer of the city wall from attack, with three square towers on each side. The proportion of archers among the Ironmen was very high, and if the Royal Army launched a strong attack, they would be met with a head-on blow.
