#78 - Chapter 3 Free Trade City
In the early morning, the "Dawn Star" cut through the mist on the sea surface, and the outline of a distant city was faintly visible. This is Tyrosh, one of the nine free trade city-states.
Tyrosh is a port city, located on an island north of the Stepstones, across the sea from the Disputed Lands. Tyrosh is twice the size of Sunspear and is an extremely noisy city. With the guidance of the pilot, the Dawn Star slowly sailed into the harbor.
Tyrosh is a diverse trading port with countless merchants from all over the world. It is also the largest slave trading center on the west coast. Many trafficked people from Westeros are sold to Slaver's Bay through here. People from all over the Seven Kingdoms can be seen, even wildlings from north of the Wall.
Tyrosh also maintains a large mercenary group. The complex population structure brings countless beliefs. The city's streets and riverside are lined with many temples and shrines of different gods. As soon as Liu Yuan disembarked, he saw the Weeping Tower located in the port. It is said that there is also a Drunkard's Fountain in the city, with wine flowing inside.
This place was once a colony of Valyria and only became independent after the Doom. The Tyroshi speak a variant of Valyrian, which is actually a dialect formed according to different regions. Tyroshi people love bright colors and will paint their hair and beards with various colors. Liu Yuan could tell from the clothes of the people on the roadside that they were all merchants and mercenaries carrying weapons. According to the records of the Citadel, at least 40% of the city's population are slaves. The ruler of the city-state is called the "Archon". The election process of the Archon is full of threats and bribes. In their words: "How can a candidate who doesn't even know how to bribe deserve to rule their city?"
The arrival of Liu Yuan and his party attracted the attention of many people. The peculiar large multi-storied warship in the port, the gorgeous noble costumes, and the well-equipped guards behind him all showed the extraordinary status of the visitors. What kind of people are most in the city? Of course, it's merchants. They chase profits and look for all opportunities to make money. As soon as Liu Yuan settled down in the hotel, merchants came to visit.
The two people who came were wearing blue coats, and a shawl slanting over their left shoulders was a typical Lyseni dress. Among them, the black man (a descendant of the Summer Islands bloodline) said: "Hello, sir, we are merchants from Lys. I am Salladhor Saan, and this is my brother Sabo Saan. Today, seeing your ship entering the port, your flag is unfamiliar, so I came to get acquainted. Our Saan family has businesses in various city-states, and I hope to have the opportunity to cooperate."
Liu Yuan said: "Hello, Mr. Saans, please sit down! I am Galon Morningstar from Westeros, the lord of Thistle Hall, and my father is Lord Adrian Celtigar, the Lord of Claw Isle."
Sabo Saan said: "So you are Ser Galon, I have heard of your reputation for a long time. Your guild's perfume is a very popular commodity in Lys. I just heard that you were studying at the Citadel before."
Liu Yuan smiled and said: "I didn't expect that there are people on the other side of the Narrow Sea who know me. During the Iron Islands rebellion, the family responded to the king's call, and I made some minor contributions. King Robert granted me a title and land on the Blackwater Rush, and my father also supported me in establishing a new family."
Salladhor Saan: "Since you are from House Celtigar, then you are not a stranger. We brought some gifts for our first meeting, please accept them with a smile!" He got up and clapped his hands, and two female slaves carried a box in. The lid of the box was open, and you could directly see that the contents were some gold and silver inlaid ivory crafts. Salladhor Saan said with a smile: "Ser Galon, these are just decorations, and the two female slaves are also gifts."
Liu Yuan said: "Thank you, Mr. Saan. I also have some gifts, Ser Bandil, come in for a moment." As soon as he finished speaking, Bandil also came in holding a wooden box, and he gently placed the box on the table.
Liu Yuan continued: "I am mainly traveling to the Free Trade City-States this time. When my territory is built, I will set up a trading post in King's Landing, and we can discuss cooperation matters there then."
Salladhor Saan very sensibly got up to say goodbye: "In that case, it's a pleasure to meet you. You must be tired from your voyage, so I won't bother you to rest." The two left with the box, without opening it on the spot to see what was inside.
Bandil said to Liu Yuan: "Lord, this Salladhor Saan is no ordinary person. He is very famous in the Disputed Lands. He has multiple identities. He is not only a merchant, but also owns a mercenary group with considerable strength. He has close ties with many smugglers in the Seven Kingdoms, and his fleet often makes a cameo appearance as pirates."
Liu Yuan was a little interested: "This Salladhor Saan has a wide range of connections! Bandil, do you know him well?"
Bandil scratched his head embarrassedly: "When I was young, I worked in the Saan family's armed group for a while. The Celtigar fleet also had trade with the Saan family before, and I had dealt with them. The Saan family is a descendant of the Valyrians in Lys. Over the centuries, many famous pirates have emerged from this family. It is said that their biggest business is the slave trade with Slaver's Bay. They have private transactions with some lords to buy criminals and vagrants, and they also sell people captured on plundered ships. I heard that they also organize slave-catching teams to catch wildlings north of the Wall."
Liu Yuan said: "That's interesting, maybe they will be useful in the future. You've been floating on the ship for so many days, go and rest first, and then take me to visit this city."
Bandil looked at the two female slaves and asked: "What about these two?"
Liu Yuan glanced at them and said: "You know my rules, slavery is absolutely not allowed. Take them down first and sign an employment contract."
The Nine Free Cities are nine independent polities, and their greatest connection is that they have a common origin, and most are former Valyrian colonies. Except for Braavos, it was established by Valyrian runaway slaves. Some city-state cultures and traditions are completely independent, especially like Braavos, while some cultural characteristics are very similar, such as Pentos and Myr. Although the Nine Free Cities all speak Valyrian, the dialects they have developed are completely different, like nine different languages.
Tyrosh is a commercial city, and merchants are considered a more glorious profession than warriors. The slave trade here is relatively developed, and there are more than a dozen slave markets on a short street.
