The magician of the fairy tale world
Commentary (Part 3)
Let me talk about the second problem of this theme:
[The short story collection model is fundamentally not suitable for serialized online articles]
Many authors who have actually written novels probably know that if a large number of readers lose interest in reading, 90% of them are not because of what you wrote, but because of "losing expectations".
What is "losing expectations"?
In simple terms, it means that the story ends in stages, and the original expectations of readers are met, so they stop reading.
The protagonist finally got rid of his death row status and was released from prison.
The criminal in the shocking unsolved case was caught.
The world-class problem that troubled the experts was solved.
The villain who bullied the people in the village was finally punished.
At this time, even if you write a new story immediately, if the next new story is not very strongly connected to the current story, there will be a strong sense of interruption, and a large number of readers will lose interest.
Even great authors often worry about losing expectations.
It is rumored that when Tudou was writing Doupo, he was worried that readers would lose a lot after the three-year agreement was fulfilled, so he dragged a lot of things to happen in the last two months of the three-year agreement, and even put Yao Lao into a deep sleep, just to avoid the appointment.
This feature is not limited to novels, but is common in various serialized works.
In order to fight against "broken expectations", authors have to rack their brains and use all their tricks. Make the development between stories have continuity and always create a feeling that "the story is not over yet".
The protagonist got rid of his death row status and came out of prison. Only then did he know that he was in prison for no reason and began to look for the framer. And the framer had already targeted the protagonist. This time, she did not intend to kill by borrowing a knife, but to do it herself...
The prisoner of the shocking unsolved case was caught, but he escaped from prison immediately, and behind him, there seemed to be a mysterious mastermind...
The high-ranking official who bullied the people and committed heinous crimes to the point of completely losing his humanity was punished. No one believed the weird things he told before his head fell off, such as the reincarnation of a celestial being or being exiled to the mortal world. Three days later, when the man who supported him came angrily to ask for punishment, the gates of the nine heavens opened, snow fell in the summer, officials welcomed the immortal king in fear, and the emperor knelt down to apologize for his death... (What a weird development!)
Anyway, there should be continuity between stories, and they cannot end abruptly. They should constantly lead to new developments and new expectations.
This is why there are so many "beating the young and the old", which is also the easiest way to create the feeling of "the story is not over yet".
And the book "The Magician in the Fairy Tale World" is obviously more like a [short story collection] in terms of overall structure.
I intentionally added some connections between the stories, so that the characters between the stories can be connected in series and a long-term main line can be established.
But the tightness of this connection is limited, more like a layer of skin, a cover, forcibly connecting the stories.
The short story model is common in real fairy tale books. Each story is almost independent, and you can read any of them at any time.
As a physical book, you can read it back and forth at will after buying the whole book.
But as a serialized online article, the short story collection model is obviously inappropriate. The staged end of each story is fatal to the follow-up reading.
One of the troubles that authors who write about astronomy often encounter is that every time they change the world, they will lose a lot of follow-up reading. And other types of creators are often troubled by the plunge in follow-up reading caused by changing maps.
So, generally speaking, authors will choose to write hundreds of thousands of words on a map, squeeze out its potential, and then change it.
And because of my initial setting, I have to change the map frequently.
No mistakes, one post, one content, one 6, one 9, one book, one bar, one look!
If I re-create this book, I might choose to suppress the world view even more, try to integrate as many stories as possible into one kingdom, and make the connection between the characters closer. Of course, there is no if in writing a book.
After talking about the two difficulties I encountered when writing a book, let me talk about my future creation plans.
