The Mountain of Ice and Fire
#145 - Training
Bernie and Grizelda were still asleep when they were awakened by a strange, never-before-heard, piercing sound. They were still in bed, startled and uncertain, when the door was banged on. "Bernie, Grizelda, get up!"
It was a woman's voice, but filled with a threatening tone, like a drawn blade.
Bernie didn't dare to delay. He muttered a "damn it," jumped out of bed, quickly put on his clothes and shoes, and before he could even open the door, it was kicked open with a bang.
The door was broken, and the bolt snapped into two pieces!
"Get up, morning training!" A beautiful girl in copper-colored armor that accentuated her curves stood straight at the door, looking heroic and valiant. Two fierce-looking, tall soldiers stood beside her, holding torches, their eyes looking at people like wolves looking at lambs.
It was still dark outside, pitch black.
Bernie was startled and quickly shouted, "Grizelda, get up..." Before he could finish the word 'bed', Grizelda had already nimbly stood behind him, her shadow even stronger than the two tall soldiers at the door.
The girl at the door had a grim face, looking at Bernie and Grizelda as if they were enemies. She turned and walked away, speaking quickly and coldly, "Bernie, Grizelda, my name is Julie Clegane. Starting today, I will be responsible for training you. You two are Ser Gregor's and Lady Jeyne's personal guards, so close-quarters swordsmanship and combat are the main subjects of training. The first thing in swordsmanship is speed, the second is strength, and the third is offensive and defensive sword techniques. Today, we will first train your speed, then your strength, and finally train basic movements such as gripping the sword for defense and straight thrusts. Remember, I will only say everything once."
Bernie and Grizelda followed closely behind the little girl, with two fierce-looking soldiers staring at their backs, making Bernie feel a chill down his spine.
"If you haven't opened the door within ten heartbeats after the military whistle blows this morning, your salary for this month will be deducted," Julie said coldly.
Bernie, who was still trembling with fear, suddenly became furious. He exclaimed "Ah!" but immediately sensed something was wrong. He heard the sound of the two bastards behind him placing their hands on their sword hilts. He immediately changed his tone, speaking softly and honestly, "Oh!"
Bernie could imitate all kinds of lifelike sounds, and he was even better at hearing all kinds of subtle sounds. His ventriloquism talent and auditory recognition were also very rare talents.
Grizelda didn't say a word, firmly remembering that the piercing sound was the sound of the military whistle. No one had told them beforehand, but that was no longer important. Grizelda remembered it, and she would definitely not make the same mistake tomorrow morning.
Julie led Bernie and Grizelda to the large training ground. The sky was slightly bright, and hundreds of people were already training inside. Some were practicing formations, some were running, some were practicing slashing, and further away, some were practicing riding, some were practicing javelin throwing...
They were already late.
Bernie estimated the number of people, there were about three hundred people training in the large training ground.
Damn it, getting up so early to train is too hard. Bernie cursed in his heart, his first thought was to find a chance to slip away.
"Lady Julie," Bernie stammered.
"Speak!" Julie didn't stop walking, she walked very fast, her small waist straight, making her seem unapproachable!
"I'm not one of Ser Gregor's infantrymen, nor am I a cavalryman. I'm Ser Gregor's wine servant, I specialize in pouring wine for Ser Gregor, handing him things, entertaining him, cleaning his armor, and polishing his swords. I... I'm not a soldier for fighting... I'm the lord's internal affairs officer... cough cough... I don't need to train, do I!"
Julie stopped, turned around, and shouted sternly, "Servant Bernie!"
"Yes, my lady!"
In fact, Julie had not been knighted by her father Gregor, she was not yet a 'lady'.
"Training your swordsmanship is to give you the ability to protect yourself. Do you think Ser Gregor needs your protection?"
Bernie was speechless.
So, Ser Gregor was afraid that he was too weak and would hinder him and others, so he arranged for him to receive training.
Bernie only felt a mouthful of bitterness.
In the eyes of the Mountain's gang of beasts, he was too useless! Everyone just hoped to train him a little better, so that he would have some ability to protect himself. The Mountain and his beastly soldiers didn't want to be distracted by taking care of his useless self when they were hacking people.
Bernie thought that training his swordsmanship was to make him protect the Mountain. He realized that he was so ridiculous, he was wrong, completely wrong!
Grizelda said, "...Lady...Julie..."
"Speak!" Julie shouted, her beautiful eyebrows furrowed, she couldn't stand Grizelda's timid appearance. Grizelda, who was even taller and stronger than a strong man, didn't even have the courage of a little girl.
"...Then...me...is it also for...me to be able to..."
"Grizelda, training you is to let you protect Lady Jeyne. You are Lady Jeyne's first handmaiden, personally chosen by Ser Gregor. You bear most of the responsibility for Lady Jeyne's safety, do you understand?"
Grizelda opened her mouth wide and couldn't close it, feeling frightened and apprehensive. She had been bullied all her life, and had never been able to protect herself, but now she had to protect Lady Jeyne.
"I can't!" Grizelda said in fear. Grizelda absolutely couldn't let Lady Jeyne be harmed by bad people because of her incompetence. If that were the case, she would never forgive herself.
"You can! I believe in Ser Gregor's judgment," Julie said.
"No!"
Julie had already turned and walked forward. The two soldiers behind her extinguished the torches, and the eastern sky revealed a sliver of white. The visibility of the huge training ground, which could accommodate thousands of people training at the same time, became clear.
Several hundred people were thrown into this huge training ground, and no matter how you looked at it, it felt like there were too few people, and the place couldn't even be warmed up.
Grizelda stood there in a daze!
Her mind was buzzing. Lady Jeyne needed her protection, oh my god, how could this be possible? She had to let someone really capable protect Lady Jeyne, such as Miss Julie would be very suitable, but it definitely couldn't be her.
Julie stopped, turned around, and shouted, "Grizelda, why aren't you moving?"
"I can't! I'm going to find Ser Gregor and explain it clearly," Grizelda said resolutely.
Julie's cold expression was immediately covered with a layer of frost. "Grov, throw the training sword to Grizelda. She doesn't need to train speed, nor does she need to train strength. She needs to first train the bloodthirst and courage of a Clegane. You spar with her."
"Miss Julie, she hasn't even been trained on how to hold a sword, and you want her to fight directly?"
"Throw the training sword to her, and then knock her down. When she gets up, knock her down again," Julie said sternly, brooking no argument.
"Yes, Miss Julie!" A murderous aura flashed across Grov's face.
Bernie's heart skipped a beat, and his legs went weak.
Grov threw the training sword to Grizelda. The sword touched Grizelda's arm, and with a thud, it fell to the ground.
"Pick it up, you sow!" Grov shouted, adopting a fighting stance. He held the sword with both hands, turned sideways to face the enemy, his front foot was empty and his rear foot was solid, the tip of the sword was diagonally facing the clueless Grizelda.
Grizelda waved her hands wildly, "No, no, no, I can't do it." It wasn't that she didn't want to train, but that she didn't dare to take on the heavy responsibility of protecting Lady Jeyne. She was afraid that her stupidity would harm Lady Jeyne.
"Knock her down, force her to pick up the sword and fight you!" Julie ordered Grov, "I want to see her enraged."
"Yes, Miss Julie."
Grov stepped forward and slashed at Grizelda with his sword. Grizelda instinctively dodged, and also raised her hands, but she was too slow. The training sword grazed Grizelda's right cheek, leaving a wound with a whoosh, and fresh blood flowed out.
"If she doesn't fight back, kill her!" Julie said coldly.
"Yes, Miss Julie." Grov's swordsmanship was superb, his heart was ruthless, and he killed without blinking an eye.
A green aura flashed across his face!
"Quickly pick up the sword, you pig... Griz, quickly pick up the sword, otherwise he will really kill you," Bernie said anxiously, shouting!
Don't skip chapters, the 'extraordinary ability' shown to the beautiful Lady Jeyne in the hemostasis chapter will be incomprehensible in the future. In the chapters, there are foreshadowings and plot resolutions, and the upper and lower chapters are connected, don't skip. Skipping chapters will make you not ugly and handsome! It's only been a few days since it was put on the shelves.
