The Mountain of Ice and Fire
#270 - Breaking into the palace
Inside the throne room, it was the time for handling citizens' petitions.
In the morning, the important ministers of the court were all in the hall.
Littlefinger, Varys, Grand Maester Pycelle, Janos Slynt, the Kingsguard, royal courtiers, and ladies-in-waiting were all gathered in the throne room.
Joffrey I sat on the Iron Throne, wearing a crown. The golden decorations on the left side of the crown were stags, and on the right were lions. His clothes were also newly tailored royal robes, with a row of stag patterns embroidered on the left side and a row of golden lions on the right.
The stag represented House Baratheon, and the golden lion represented House Lannister.
Early in the morning, Queen Cersei stood beside the Iron Throne, occasionally whispering her opinions to the young king regarding the petitions of the people.
The King's Justice, Ilyn Payne, stood on the left side of the Iron Throne with his greatsword on his back. On the right stood the Hound, Sandor Clegane, taller and more ruthless than Payne, in armor and with a longsword, his scarred face intimidating. He wasn't wearing his grotesque dog-head helmet in the throne room.
Behind the Iron Throne, in a semicircle, stood a squad of twenty Westerlands red-cloaked soldiers, commanded by the Hound.
Below the seven steps of the Iron Throne stood six members of the Kingsguard, still led by the fearless Ser Barristan Selmy.
Sansa Stark stood among the many courtiers and ladies-in-waiting, looking straight ahead at Joffrey I on the Iron Throne. Joffrey, with his golden hair and blue eyes, had a handsome and extraordinary appearance. He had told Sansa that when he sat on the Iron Throne, he would not allow her to look around or at the ground. He wanted Sansa to look at him the whole time, otherwise he would punish Sansa's disrespect and punish Eddard for treason.
Sansa stood stiffly among the courtiers and ladies-in-waiting, as rigid as a piece of wood.
The gazes of the noblewomen and ladies-in-waiting swept over her, and Sansa could feel the malice in those gazes without even looking.
Sansa had witnessed the corpse of Septa Mordane; Vayon Poole, who had been kind his whole life and never offended anyone, had also had his head chopped off, his blood staining the ground… When Sansa and Jeyne were taken from the Tower of the Hand by the Hound, they witnessed too much bloodshed along the way. The servants, teachers, and guards who had grown up with her had all fallen in pools of blood, including some very kind women.
Her father had also gone from Hand to prisoner in the blink of an eye, and had committed a great crime of treason.
Sansa really didn't understand why the beautiful and kind Queen Cersei didn't believe her. Her father wouldn't commit treason; there must have been some misunderstanding. She swore to Queen Cersei that she knew her father, and she swore to the Queen Cersei by the Seven Gods and her family honor, kneeling down to beg for her father's life, but the Queen simply didn't believe her.
Sansa remembered the night after her father Eddard told her he was sending her back to King's Landing, she secretly ran to tell Queen Cersei, hoping that Queen Cersei could come forward to persuade her father not to send her back to Winterfell. She belonged here, she was the future queen. She swore in front of Queen Cersei that she would be as virtuous a queen as Cersei, she could not return to Winterfell, she wanted to accompany her beloved Joffrey, and then marry him after her moonblood came, and bear him many children.
Queen Cersei praised her decision and wisdom, and said that she would find a way to keep Sansa in King's Landing and not let her father send her back to Winterfell. Sansa was filled with gratitude to the Queen. Then, she did indeed stay, and lived in Maegor's Holdfast like Queen Cersei. Accompanied her was Jeyne Poole, but Jeyne Poole just cried every day, and Sansa had to hold back her own tears to comfort her.
Every day, Sansa had to be dressed up beautifully by the maids arranged by the current Queen Mother Cersei to attend court and listen to King Joffrey I handle the petitions of the people.
Sansa looked at Joffrey I without blinking, which pleased Joffrey, who had been observing her reaction. Sansa was his betrothed, and he needed a completely obedient wife, even though Sansa's father was a traitor who妄想to steal his Iron Throne, a heinous and unforgivable crime.
Joffrey had promised Sansa last night in her kneeling and tears that he would spare her father's life, but that was just to enjoy the grateful smile on her tear-stained face. Joffrey I had already made up his mind to kill Eddard. It wasn't that he wasn't merciful enough, but Eddard dared to support Stannis Baratheon as king, which was an absolutely unforgivable sin, a great crime.
Today, according to the prior arrangements of the important ministers of the court, Joffrey I would handle many of the people's petitions. Before long, Joffrey couldn't concentrate. He squirmed on the Iron Throne, constantly changing his posture. Batch after batch of lowly commoners came to petition, which made Joffrey very impatient. He began to look around and ignored the petitions of the people kneeling below. Cersei had to answer the people's petitions in place of the king. Just when Joffrey was too bored, a guard reported: The Mountain is leading troops into the city and heading towards the royal palace.
This cheered Joffrey up!
The Hound, Sandor Clegane, was his dog, and the Mountain was his grandfather's dog. They were both dogs, but the Mountain was an even more vicious dog. Joffrey liked the Mountain coming to be his dog as well.
Joffrey's eyes lit up on the Iron Throne: "The Mountain is here? Grandfather must have sent him to celebrate my ascension to the Iron Throne. Quickly, bring him in."
"Yes, Your Majesty," the guard said.
But the guard was stopped by Queen Cersei, who ordered him to first monitor the Mountain, find out how many troops the Mountain had brought, how far away he was, and how long it would take to reach the Red Keep. The Mountain dared to come here, naturally on the orders of his father, but why hadn't his father sent a raven to inform them in advance?
This was what Cersei was very dissatisfied with. She was now the Queen Mother, and no matter how powerful her father was, he was still her vassal. Now the Mountain was relying on his father's name to be so arrogant, which made Cersei even more unhappy.
The guard agreed and left!
This made Joffrey I very unhappy. He almost shouted at his mother, but he felt that this would damage the dignity of the king. Under his mother's stern gaze, Joffrey resentfully chose to compromise temporarily, suppressing the reprimand that had reached his lips.
What did women know? Just like Sansa! But Cersei was his mother, she couldn't be compared to Sansa. Joffrey had only been on the Iron Throne for a short time, and his mother was his greatest assistant in handling the petitions of his subjects. Joffrey decided to endure her for now. Women were all fools, including his mother, she hadn't figured out who was king now.
Joffrey I felt that it was necessary to seriously remind his mother Cersei after the meeting: Who is the king?!
Cersei said, "Grand Maester Pycelle, have you received a letter from my father dispatching the Mountain to King's Landing?"
Grand Maester Pycelle was in charge of all external correspondence for the royal family. He maintained close contact with Duke Tywin for a long time. If Tywin had any actions that related to the royal palace, he would first send a letter to Pycelle.
"Your Majesty, Queen Mother, I have not received a letter from Duke Tywin assigning the Mountain to King's Landing."
Queen Cersei looked at Littlefinger, Varys, and Ser Barristan Selmy, the captain of the Kingsguard: "Important ministers, the Mountain has suddenly led troops to King's Landing without a letter from my father. What should we do? Should we let him into the royal palace, or order him to return to the Westerlands?"
Littlefinger sat up straight with his neck erect, his hair meticulously combed, and he sat upright at the table of the important ministers, twirling a quill in his hand.
Littlefinger chose silence.
Varys folded his hands in his wide sleeves, his fat white face covered with powder, and his white robe sprayed with a lot of perfume. His eyes were gentle, but he looked down at the messy documents on the table, also choosing silence.
Grand Maester Pycelle also closed his mouth.
Cersei looked at Barristan, whose hair was already gray.
Barristan stepped forward and bowed, saying: "Your Majesty, Queen Mother, Your Majesty the King, I think we can first order the Mountain to come in alone, and let him explain in front of the Iron Throne why he brought troops here, whether it was on the orders of Duke Tywin, and why he brought troops into the city and stormed the palace. After asking about his intentions, we can make a decision."
Joffrey I's lips curled up, revealing a contemptuous smile: "Ser Barristan, are you afraid of the Mountain? You only dare to let him in alone? He is my grandfather's vassal, and his soldiers are also my soldiers. I bet the Mountain is here on the orders of my grandfather to congratulate me on my ascension to the throne. I want to appoint him as an important minister of the court, responsible for protecting the royal family and the safety of the Red Keep." He looked at the Hound, Sandor, "I already have a very powerful dog, but I don't mind raising an even more vicious dog."
The Hound Sandor's face twisted noticeably.
Grand Maester Pycelle said: "Your Majesty, according to the law, no vassal army may enter the Red Keep without the order of Your Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen Mother."
"Let the Mountain in!" the King said, raising his voice, "He is my grandfather's vicious dog, what are you afraid of him for? If he doesn't listen to my orders, I'll chop off his head."
Janos Slynt, the commander of the City Watch of King's Landing, looked at Queen Mother Cersei. The Queen Mother nodded, and Janos stepped forward and said: "Your Majesty the King is wise, I will go and welcome the Mountain into the palace."
"Go quickly, Commander Janos, you are a knowledgeable and courageous commander of the City Watch. You performed extraordinarily in arresting the traitor Eddard. Go and bring the Mountain here, I want him to kneel before me."
Janos Slynt said: "Yes, Your Majesty."
There was a commotion in the throne room. The King's Justice, Ilyn Payne, and the Mountain did not kneel when they met the late King Robert. The late King Robert was generous and did not care about these small details, so he let them be.
Joffrey I had only been on the throne for a short time, and he wanted the Mountain to kneel when he met him, and he was afraid that the Mountain would not listen. But seeing the King's smugness, pride, and recklessness, he would probably force the Mountain to kneel.
This was not a good thing!
*
The gates of the Red Keep slowly closed,抢在before the Mountain arrived with his troops.
Commander Janos Slynt stood on the city wall.
He was followed by a group of gold cloak officers.
The Mountain rode up to the gate on a tall horse.
He looked up at Janos's frog-like face, his gaze like an awl, and Janos's heart jumped, and a sense of fear arose spontaneously.
The Mountain just glanced at him, and Janos's courage was挫折.
"Open the door!" Beric Dondarrion beside the Mountain shouted, "I am a courtier of the late King Robert,奉艾德首相命令sent out on official business, and奉乔佛里国王陛下派出的斥候的命令returned. Is Lord Janos refusing me to return to the royal palace to report for duty by closing the gates of the Red Keep?"
Janos Slynt said: "According to national law, no vassal may lead troops into the Red Keep unless they have received the order of His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen Mother. His Majesty King Joffrey has ordered Earl Gregor Clegane to be summoned to appear in the throne room, and all others must wait outside the walls of the Red Keep."
The Red Priest Thoros was furious, his eyes widened, and he did not say a word.
The Mountain stared at Janos and shouted in a deep voice: "Open the door!"
The gates of the Red Keep slowly opened.
The Mountain was too tall, like a giant on horseback. If he insisted on not dismounting, he would not be able to enter through the small side door.
Beric Dondarrion and the Red Priest Thoros took the lead in entering. The gold cloaks guarding the gate saw that the two men had unkind expressions and did not dare to stop them. These two were both courtiers. The gold cloak soldiers were merciless in bullying civilians, but they were afraid when they encountered this kind of person.
They also had no reason to stop the two courtiers from entering.
The Mountain slowly entered, followed by his two warhorses carrying shields, javelins, greatswords, and plate armor. Behind the horse's tail, the养女Julie, the神箭手Anguy, Captain Alyn, Polliver, Sweetmouth Raff, Ser Gerrick, the Executioner, and记事本and other generals followed.
The several gold cloaks who opened the door stared blankly as these guys with unkind expressions just闯進entered,闯進the royal palace.
The centurion at the city gate looked up at Commander Janos Slynt on the city wall, waiting for his order. Judging from the looks of it, as long as the gold cloaks drew their swords, Clegane's魔兵would also draw their swords.
Five hundred cavalrymen were much stronger than the gold cloaks guarding the Red Keep. The combat power of the gold cloaks in King's Landing was even weaker than the garrison of Lannisport. This group of pampered guys simply couldn't compare to a group of悍匪who licked blood from their刀头.
The two thousand garrison troops in King's Landing were scattered at the seven gates of King's Landing, and the number of garrison troops in the Red Keep was not large. The garrison's barracks were also stationed at the Iron Gate and the Dragon Gate.
The Westerlands red-cloaked army, which entered under the banner of Duke Tywin, already gave the gold cloaks a strong pressure.
Duke Tywin's daughter was Queen Mother Cersei, and Joffrey I was his grandson. And the Mountain was a猛将under Duke Tywin, the most vicious恶犬.
At the moment, news came that Stannis Baratheon was recruiting troops on Dragonstone; Renly Baratheon had raised the banner of rebellion in Storm's End; Robb Stark in the north was also publicly summoning his vassals, preparing to go south. At this critical moment, the Mountain suddenly entered King's Landing under the banner of Duke Tywin and the Clegane family, obviously to support Queen Mother Cersei and Joffrey I.
But there was a problem, that was that Queen Mother Cersei and Prince Joffrey and the important ministers of the court did not know about the Mountain's arrival.
The Red Keep was the center of power for the royal family and important ministers, and also the king's palace. It had always been forbidden for vassals to enter with troops without any summons.
And the Mountain had set a very bad precedent!
Janos watched helplessly as the Mountain led more than five hundred Clegane cavalrymen slowly and calmly entered the Red Keep. He swallowed the words that涌到his mouth, even if he gave the order, he could not stop the Mountain and his party from forcibly entering.
Though the Mountain was audacious, he wouldn't dare openly disregard the law and lead an army into the Red Keep unless he had the support of a powerful figure. This supporter was clearly the owner of the golden lion banner: Duke Tywin Lannister.
Although Janos was ugly, with a frog-like face and eyes, he wasn't stupid. The Mountain leading over five hundred cavalrymen into the Red Keep, unafraid of the Gold Cloaks and the Kingsguard, would be impossible without someone backing him. Janos would never believe it, even if he was beaten to death.
He just didn't understand why Duke Tywin had sent the Mountain into the Red Keep this time without even informing Cersei and the important ministers of the court.
Was it disdain? Or some other purpose? Or was Duke Tywin trying to establish his authority in King's Landing?
Janos quickly descended the city wall, jumped on his horse, and hurried to the Mountain's side. "Ser Gregor, please allow me to take you to the throne room to see Queen Cersei and King Joffrey."
"Get out!" The Mountain said coldly.
The Mountain's voice wasn't loud, but it was definitely filled with chilling murderous intent!
Janos Slynt froze instantly, as if a whip had struck him.
Several of the centurions beside him showed anger on their faces. This was the Red Keep, not the Westerlands. The Gold Cloaks here held far more power than the red-cloaked soldiers the Mountain brought.
However, after the Mountain glared at the centurions, none of them dared to speak: they were angry but dared not express it!
The Mountain snorted, and his warhorse slowly moved forward, followed by his soldiers, leaving Janos and the others behind.
The crisp, dense sound of hooves echoed in the Red Keep.
Over five hundred cavalrymen, one hundred and fifty reserve cavalrymen, and about fifteen hundred warhorses filed into the Red Keep.
In the throne room, Queen Cersei, standing beside the Iron Throne, heard the dense sound of hooves. Her face turned ugly. Her father, Tywin, had gone too far. She was the Queen Mother, how could her father allow his vicious dog to barge into the royal palace of King's Landing like this? Who was the king? Who was the subject? Wasn't this going to cause chaos?
