The Mountain of Ice and Fire
#84 - Blood Raven
Several centurions exchanged glances. Bard Lannister said, "My lord, Clegane noodles truly don't stick together."
Earl Odd almost choked back a snort. He could see the serious expressions on the faces of these men; they genuinely believed the noodles wouldn't stick.
However, the Earl's decades of experience told him that noodles, no matter how well made or how skilled the servants, would always stick together.
Earl Odd rationally recalled the signal horn, snow salt, and chopsticks. Could it be that the Mountain had truly created noodles that wouldn't stick? In an instant, Earl Odd thought of a very formidable figure from the Seven Kingdoms, from the former Targaryen dynasty, for whom a song sung throughout the Seven Kingdoms was written: 'A Thousand and One Eyes'.
How could a person possibly have a thousand and one eyes?
But this person truly possessed this magical ability. His name was Brynden Rivers, known as "Bloodraven" or "Lord Bloodraven," the legitimized bastard son of King Aegon IV Targaryen and Lady Melissa Blackwood.
Brynden Rivers was initially a strong warrior, much like Gregor Clegane. Brynden's sword was the Valyrian steel sword Dark Sister, owned by the Targaryen family. He was also a skilled archer, using a longbow made of weirwood.
Those in the Seven Kingdoms who had received a strict noble upbringing knew that Brynden Rivers possessed the power of 'a thousand eyes'.
According to historical records, Brynden Rivers could initially only inhabit a rabbit, seeing through the rabbit's eyes; then dogs, sheep, pigs, and finally all animals, including wolves and shadowcats, could be inhabited and controlled by him; eventually, his inhabiting ability developed to include all kinds of birds in the sky. Ultimately, the eyes of all birds and beasts could be used by him.
This brought him endless convenience in battle.
When did Brynden Rivers start to slowly acquire the ability of 'a thousand and one eyes' from an ordinary warrior? No one knows except the Seven Gods and himself. There is no clear time record in the history books.
But the people of the Seven Kingdoms know that Brynden Rivers' ability is a manifestation of the will of the gods in the world.
The gods have seven faces, and also seventy faces, and also seven hundred or seven thousand faces.
Lannisport trades with the Free City of Braavos across the Narrow Sea. The Braavos archipelago has an Isle of Gods, where various gods are worshipped, including a temple dedicated to the Many-Faced God: the House of Black and White of the Faceless Men. It is said that the Many-Faced God is also the God of Death. If one God of Death has a thousand faces, then how many faces would all these gods have combined?
If the Mountain has created a type of noodle that absolutely doesn't stick together, then this ability, although far less miraculous than Brynden Rivers' 'thousand and one eyes', is, like Brynden Rivers' transformation, likely a fragment of the will of the Seven Gods.
As Brynden Rivers' magical abilities grew stronger, he was highly valued by King Aerys I, who promoted him to Hand of the King, the First Minister of the Seven Kingdoms, second only to the King. When Aerys I died, he became the Hand of the King for Maekar I.
And his magical abilities continued to grow stronger.
Because of Bloodraven's extraordinary intelligence capabilities, he could promptly thwart all kinds of enemy conspiracies. It was customary for god-favored and loyal individuals to be valued by the King or their great lord.
Later, in addition to being able to inhabit birds and beasts, Bloodraven could also enter the future through dreams, seeing specific scenes of future events; after some unknown dream training, Bloodraven's abilities became stronger again. Relying on his dream abilities, he could gradually travel back to past time and space, discovering those top secrets that had been deliberately hidden and should never have been known.
In 233 AC, Bloodraven, as the Hand of the King at the time, decided to hold a Great Council to publicly elect Maekar I's successor in order to avoid national division. He schemed to deceive the rebel leader Daemon Blackfyre, agreeing to allow him to come to the Royal Palace Great Council to assert his legitimate Targaryen royal bloodline and fairly obtain the right to participate in the election and be elected, while Bloodraven guaranteed his safety.
However, as soon as Daemon Blackfyre stepped into King's Landing, he was captured by the gold cloaks. Bloodraven beheaded Daemon Blackfyre outside the Red Keep's gate, and his head was placed on a spear.
After killing his political enemy, Aegon V was elected King at the Great Council. The King then arrested Bloodraven for violating his promise to Daemon Blackfyre.
Aegon V, in order to avoid the hypocritical reputation of breaking his word on the Iron Throne, decided to pass the blame to Bloodraven. He publicly announced Bloodraven's death sentence, while giving Bloodraven the opportunity to take the black and avoid the death penalty.
Bloodraven had no choice but to become a brother of the Night's Watch on the Wall.
In 239 AC, Bloodraven was elected Lord Commander of the Night's Watch by all the Night's Watchmen because of his outstanding abilities. In 252 AC, Bloodraven disappeared completely during a ranger patrol beyond the Wall.
This Bloodraven was so powerful that he could inhabit and control all kinds of birds and beasts, and could also travel through the past and future, personally experiencing real events in dreams. Where did he go after disappearing beyond the Wall, death or life? Modern historical biographies end here, and no one knows his ending.
Although Earl Odd didn't know the ending of Bloodraven's life, the college dog who transmigrated into this world as the Mountain knew that Bloodraven's abilities became stronger again later, becoming a 'Greenseer', and his avatar was a Three-Eyed Raven. He would also become the mystical mentor of Bran Stark, the seven-year-old boy from the Stark family in the North.
As a noble who would inherit the family territory, Earl Odd was required to learn various noble etiquettes and kingdom history from a young age, including the eastern history across the Narrow Sea. Earl Odd knew very well about the outstanding figures in ancient and modern history.
More than a hundred years after the dragons disappeared, various magic scrolls and magic spells gradually became ineffective, but the will of the gods never stopped descending, which is why the Faith of the Seven became the state religion of the Seven Kingdoms.
Although the technological knowledge of the Citadel in Oldtown is driving the progress of the world, mysticism has always been around people, like a shadow of humanity, never far away.
Based on his understanding, Earl Odd reluctantly classified the Mountain's 'Clegane Noodles' into the realm of mysticism like Bloodraven, but when his eyes met his subordinates' eyes again, he realized that he might be wrong again.
These centurions of the family knew Earl Odd too well.
Bard Lannister said, "My lord, Clegane noodles are not some kind of magical power as you imagine... but noodles produced by machinery, the kind of machinery similar to the winch machinery of our Lannisport city gate."
Facing the Earl's even deeper frown, Barrow Lanny said, "My lord, Clegane noodles were not invented and produced by the Mountain this time, but by a blacksmith who had worked on very complex city gate winches. This kind of mechanical noodle belongs to the science of the Citadel."
"Alright, lead the way. I want to see the 'Clegane Noodles' that absolutely won't stick together," Earl Odd ordered.
