#758 - Ch757 Blue Socks and the New Era

Chapter 758: Blue Socks and the New Era

"Ms. Montague, Ms. Vesey, Ms. Lovelace, good day."

Apparently, Deloz had heard of this famous society from his mentor. Compared to the "everyone is graceful and elegant" salon for the rich and powerful, which must follow strict and demanding social etiquette, the "Blue Socks" advocates comfort and simplicity.

When the host of a banquet wears casual blue wool socks, it not only relieves the cash-strapped female guests from the pressure of wearing fancy clothes, but also guides the wealthy ladies to wear simple and elegant clothes.

This place celebrates wisdom and ideas, not money and power.

As Pindar says, human excellence grows like a vine watered by green dew, growing among the wise and upright toward the clear sky.

Lovelace, her half mentor (the other half was some old guy who always denied it), when she told it once, over and over again, one of the stories, Deloz fell irresistibly in love with this little society that was almost openly in opposition to those boring salons-

Just like she fell in love with Roland Collins at first sight.

She wanted so badly to meet these lovely ladies and be part of their group.

Today, she has that opportunity.

"Charles Babbage, Droz Fonseca. A pioneer on the path of truth, one of my most beloved students - Mr. Daniel Heffer mentions your name every day, and my husband is getting a little impatient."

William was amused: "Who knows?"

"It is my pleasure," Babbage said with great restraint, bowing to the three ladies who stood up to greet him. Although he had been very careful and reminded himself not to be rude, his heart filled with the desire for knowledge still urged him to break up the lengthy opening.

"Perhaps I disturbed your little gathering."

"No, no, how could that be? We were also invited here and have seen the magic of those machines long ago..." Lovelace said in a brisk voice. She looked much younger than her actual age. "Let my William show you around. Like I told you before, you two are destined to work together."

William: "What if you and Ada's thinking is too fast and ahead of the times?"

Babbage did not think this was ironic, and nodded rather reservedly: "That's right."

Being too fast and ahead of the times means that before this project is completed, the next generation, which is better and more "perfect", will come along, riding on the dead gold pound.

Ada Lovelace glanced at her husband and gave him an awkward smile.

She thought of the letters between her and Mr. Babbage, and his constant satire on government officials, saying that they were "less intelligent than cows and less useful" -

'Sir, Mr. Babbage, we have just given you fifteen thousand pounds for the "machine" you mentioned. And now you tell me you want another eight thousand pounds?'

'I must remind you that the word "just now" should not be used here - that was last year. Besides, I have a new idea, a better idea - do you insist on the old product, and would rather cut the money and spend it on women's legs and buttocks, satisfying the whims of the palms, rather than endure a few days for knowledge and wisdom?'

'I have no way of explaining this to Parliament, Mr. Babbage. It is a pity.'

"Parliament? You need to give an account for this small sum of money? Who did you give an account to when you hugged the eight-year-old boy?"

Then the situation was irreversible.

Investors are not stupid.

And these days, there are even fewer people who can invest in "mathematical machines" -

If Babbage had said that this huge, complex machine of metal pipes and gears not only had the power to calculate, but also had a little hole that could make a man more manly than any other man—

If he said that, I'd be willing to lie a little...

I'm afraid I don't need to worry about investment.

"If Mr. Daniel Heller hadn't written to me, I would have really considered telling a lie," Babbage said with a serious face, making a funny joke that he himself didn't laugh at all: "If a child hadn't bought a deformed hedgehog from me, I wouldn't have been able to get through this period..."

William listened, sighed inwardly, and was somewhat glad that his wife had told him about Mr. Babbage's difficult life - he had always thought that his wife and the old gentleman were "friends" in some sense, and they occasionally met in private to relax with each other.

He is usually too busy to take care of his wife, so it's good this way.

Unexpectedly.

Such an amazing harvest.

'I thought he was just your lover.'

'William.'

The latest novel is published first on Liu9shuba!

'Okay, okay, I apologize for that? But really, I should talk to Daniel. If that machine can do complex and sophisticated calculations - you know what we do now, don't you?'

'Yes, and you don't have to apologize for it.'

"Oh... Really? You are such a bad girl, come here and let me kiss you..."

In short.

What Babbage and his wife had come up with was definitely an important core - a vision for their bright future.

"Do you know the white mine?"

William asked.

"A substance far superior to coal. It is mined from the same mine, but has a different way of 'reproduction'. We have tested it and found that it can produce many unimaginable things - did you see it?"

A teapot with spider legs that can walk and brew tea automatically naturally needs a better energy source. Firewood and coal alone are not enough.

That’s not all.

There are many more interesting uses for white ore, if you add a machine that can perform preset programming...

"Mr. Babbage," William said with a gleam in his eyes, "we will change the times."

Babbage was not as excited as he was. He looked at Lovelace inquiringly and nodded slowly.

"Let me see what you have done first."

The two men pushed the door open and left.

Droz on the side was almost loving this atmosphere.

She stood beside her half mentor, at one end of the other two ladies.

This is the 'life' she wants.

"How's it going, little peck?"

Lovelace touched the student's arm with her folding fan and whispered teasingly, "I heard you are in love?"
