#124 - In the Mist
The next day, as soon as Lin Jue woke up, he noticed swirling mist outside the window, a sign of fog rolling in.
The mist was coming.
"It's coming so fast. I was planning to catch a few more Ghouls," Lin Jue muttered.
Lin Jue went to the bathroom to wash up, figuring he could catch some Ghouls in the mist later.
After washing up, he began to pack his things, stuffing the raincoat hanging on the rack into his backpack.
Because the shop owner was inside the raincoat, he couldn't return it to his system backpack; he had to carry it with him.
And just like the system's description of the raincoat, after the Ghoul had entered, he could clearly feel a wave of resentment permeating his heart.
However, this resentment wasn't strong, it was even very weak, perhaps because the shop owner maintained his complete sanity.
Even 'No Taboos' couldn't eliminate this resentment, because it wasn't an external attack, but originated from the depths of his own heart.
On the raincoat, the shop owner's ghostly face appeared, looking at Lin Jue packing his things with a puzzled expression: "Kid, what are you packing for?"
He had a very bad feeling. Why did this kid look like he was about to go out? He had to know it was foggy outside.
"Packing, of course, is for going out," Lin Jue said, putting the bronze dagger from under his pillow into the small compartment outside his backpack.
"Aren't you crazy? Going out in this fog is suicide!" The shop owner struggled violently in the raincoat: "Let me out first, I'm not going, I still have to open my shop."
"Hey, Grandpa, I'm going out for something very important," Lin Jue said seriously, pressing the raincoat to the bottom of his backpack. "A group of the motherland's flowers are being persecuted, and they must have psychological problems. This time, I'm going to enlighten them and help them grow strong and healthy."
"Grandpa, you don't want these future pillars of the country to grow up crooked, do you? As a youth of the new era, we must contribute to the future of the country."
"Scram, I don't believe a word you say, kid. Besides, I'm an old man from the old era..." Grandpa roared in the backpack, and Lin Jue zipped it up, finally finding some peace and quiet.
After confirming that everything was packed, Lin Jue put on his backpack and opened the door.
In less than twenty minutes, the fog outside had completely obscured vision. The swirling mist was ethereal, like a fairyland, but it concealed a bloody hell.
He stood in the corridor and took out the application form.
At that moment, the bloodstains on the form flowed, turning into crimson lines, all pointing in the same direction.
Following the direction indicated by the bloodlines should lead him to the missing school.
Lin Jue slowly walked downstairs, stood at the entrance of the building, took a deep breath as he looked at the Yángtáo Street outside with visibility less than twenty meters, and stepped into it.
The fog swirled around him, and every inch of his skin felt a gloomy chill, as if countless dead men's hands were stroking him.
The already silent Yángtáo Street was now even more desolate, like a graveyard forgotten at the edge of the world. Even the Ghouls in the mist didn't appear.
Lin Jue walked alone in the mist, and after walking for thirty minutes, he had completely lost his sense of direction.
As Chen Fu had said, staying in the mist for too long would distort one's sense of direction.
The hazy outlines of buildings appeared in the surrounding fog. These buildings were desolate and dilapidated, and the walls were stained with mottled bloodstains, as if many homicides had occurred.
These were definitely not buildings from the real world. It seemed that walking in the mist for too long led to another space-time.
Lin Jue stopped in front of a building covered with withered ivy. He curiously stroked the exposed wall skin, feeling the cold touch from his fingertips.
"It's indeed not a building from the real world. There's no such building around Yángtáo Street. It seems that the mist and the real world are indeed two different worlds. The so-called mist descent is actually the overlapping of two worlds."
He had had this guess before, but now he finally confirmed it after entering the mist.
"Kid, leave quickly, there's something there!" The shop grandpa's uneasy voice came from the backpack. Lin Jue also instantly noticed a peeping gaze from inside the building.
He looked up along the gaze, and on the balcony on the second floor, stood a woman wearing a wedding dress.
The wedding dress on the woman's body was already filthy with mud, like a corpse that had been dead for a long time crawling out of the grave. In her arms, she was holding a doll.
The doll was pale all over, with bright red rouge painted on both sides, and its eyes were also a strange blood red, which was painted with human blood.
This was a paper doll.
Both of them were emitting a thick black aura. Compared to the woman, the black aura on the paper doll was much stronger, already reaching level D.
The paper doll's blood-red eyes turned, staring at Lin Jue. The mouth outlined with ink lines raised upward, revealing a cold smile.
The shop old man in the backpack became even more anxious, constantly urging Lin Jue to leave quickly.
"Grandpa, don't worry. You're all alone in the bag. I'll find you two companions. I think you'll definitely like children."
While comforting the shop owner in the backpack, Lin Jue took out a fruit knife and walked up the stairs.
Arriving on the second floor, Lin Jue didn't rush directly to that room, but started knocking on doors one by one.
However, it seemed that there were only the female Ghoul and the paper doll on this floor. No Ghouls lived in the other rooms. Some struggling bloody handprints could be seen on the door panels.
"Were they all killed by that paper doll? It seems that Ghouls don't kill each other as the world believes, they just prefer to kill ordinary people who don't pose any threat."
"It's like killing jackals and killing ants. Killing jackals may result in being bitten to death, but killing ants is not dangerous at all."
Lin Jue touched the already dry bloodstains on the door panel and asked softly, "Grandpa, do you Ghouls kill each other to improve your strength?"
"Yes, Ghouls are full of negative emotions, and negative emotions are the source of strength. Swallowing the same kind is swallowing negative emotions, but it's very dangerous, after all, you might be swallowed yourself. Compared to that, swallowing living people is safer."
Grandpa responded in the backpack. Lin Jue nodded, knowing how to improve Grandpa's strength in the future.
When he walked to the outside of that room, Lin Jue reached out and knocked on the door, opening his mouth very politely: "Girl, I just saw you and your child downstairs. Your child's condition looks very bad. Do you need any help?"
There was a deathly silence inside, but the door opened silently, and a paper-paste pale little hand stretched out from the crack in the door.
A sea-like resentment poured out, and the fruit knife in Lin Jue's hand fell sharply. The flames tore the resentment apart and ignited the paper hand.
A child's miserable crying immediately came from behind the door, like a nightingale crying, making people shudder. Lin Jue directly slammed the door open and rushed in.
The room was full of bloodstains, and rotten minced meat was scattered in the corners, mostly living people who had strayed into the mist and were eaten by the things in this room.
The paper doll was lying in the corner, one arm burned to ashes by the flames. It stared at Lin Jue with resentment, but no longer dared to act rashly. The strength the other party had just shown made it afraid.
The female Ghoul wearing the wedding dress stood aside, holding a red hijab in her hand, looking like she wanted to attack but didn't dare, after all, the strongest paper doll in the room was injured, and her strength was even weaker.
Lin Jue took out a raincoat from his bag and looked at the two Ghouls: "Give you two choices, either come in and be used by me, or be killed by me."
The two Ghouls looked at each other, their evil aura soaring into the sky, and once again attacked Lin Jue.
These two Ghouls were completely occupied by resentment and had no possibility of communication.
"Unfortunately, this is your choice. I won't give you a second chance."
Lin Jue sighed regretfully and no longer held back. These two Ghouls were full of resentment, and collecting them into the raincoat would bring him a lot of negative emotions. At that time, let alone helping, his own strength would be affected.
The only use for these two guys was to become nourishment for the shop grandpa.
