#3 - She tilted her head and looked at me
“Not your mother?”
Lin Jue paused, lowering his voice: “You think she's something that came out of the fog? Pretending to be your mother?”
His expression turned serious, and he placed his hand on the bag beside him: “Tell me why you think so?”
“Just five days ago, on the weekend, my mom went out to work, but that day, fog rolled in,” Li Cheng began to recount.
“I frantically called her, but the phone kept ringing with no answer.”
“She didn't come home until the afternoon, and that's when she started acting strange.”
His face twitched as he sank into a terrifying memory: “At first, she would put raw rice in a bowl and tell me it was cooked rice.”
“Then, she would scoop water from the toilet bowl into a glass, say it was orange juice, and tell me to drink it.”
“Ew—” Lin Jue involuntarily sucked in a breath of cold air; that was too terrifying.
“It's not just that; all her perceptions have become wrong. You've seen it too; she says normal people bleed green blood, and even if her own arm is cut, she doesn't feel any pain.”
“And the night after I came back from seeing you…” Li Cheng's body began to tremble again, and he buried his head back in his legs: “When I woke up to go to the bathroom, I found someone standing next to my bed.”
“It was my mom!”
“I was so scared, I didn't dare move, I just squinted and peeked at her…”
“She kept holding one pose, she was tilting her head, looking at me.”
Tilting her head?
“According to what you're saying, your mom might think that tilting her head is normal,” Lin Jue said thoughtfully, sensing something was off.
“That's not the point; the point is she was watching me all night.” Li Cheng raised his head, looking almost frantic: “If I stay in this house any longer, I'll go completely crazy; please, help me.”
“Don't hold your pee; it's bad for you later.” Lin Jue picked up his backpack: “Be good, come take your medicine.”
“I'm not sick, she's the one who's sick, why should I take medicine? You still don't believe me!”
Li Cheng was hysterical but tried to keep his voice down; he didn't want anyone outside to hear him.
“Taking medicine is just a pretense; I only brought you ordinary vitamins.” Lin Jue reassured him, opening his backpack, and a fruit knife clattered to the ground.
The atmosphere in the room instantly quieted down, Li Cheng's eyelids twitched, and he pursed his lips tightly.
“Sorry, I used it to peel fruit on the way here.” Lin Jue picked up the fruit knife somewhat awkwardly and took out the prop pills from his bag.
There were no labels on the white medicine bottle, making it hard to believe they were vitamins.
He walked over, placed the medicine bottle on the desk, and put his hand on Li Cheng's shoulder: “Trust me, I'm a doctor dedicated to saving lives, I wouldn't do anything to harm you. Be good and listen to your mother these next few days, and I'll definitely find a way to save you.”
His eyes behind the gold-rimmed glasses were full of pity; this child was too pitiful.
Li Cheng looked at Lin Jue, then opened the medicine bottle. Inside were small yellow pills that smelled like oranges as soon as it was opened.
They were just prop pills for acting, and they really were filled with vitamins. They couldn't use real medicine for acting.
This prop was only to enhance Lin Jue's image as a doctor and smoothly unfold the third plot, and served no other purpose.
The third plot started by saying that he came to deliver medicine, so he couldn't just show up without any medicine.
“I believe you.” A forced smile tugged at the corners of Li Cheng's mouth.
Lin Jue tore a sticky note from the desk, wrote down his phone number, and instructed: “I have something else to do, so I'll leave first. Call me if you have any problems.”
“Okay.” Li Cheng clutched the sticky note tightly in his hand, and as Lin Jue prepared to open the door, he asked again: “Dr. Zhou, can I really trust you?”
“Of course.” Lin Jue turned back, pointing to the white coat on his body: “I'm a doctor dedicated to saving lives.”
Walking out of the room, Lin Jue closed the door behind him.
Li Cheng's mother was sitting on the sofa, anxiously asking when she saw him come out: “How is my son?”
“He's fine, it's probably just adolescence; kids are a bit rebellious at this age.” Lin Jue packed up his bag: “I brought him medicine; his illness will be cured in a few days.”
“Thank you, doctor. The child's father died early, and I raised him alone. I never expected him to get such a strange illness.”
Li Cheng's mother said, wiping away tears, looking like a normal, caring mother.
However, the fact that she thought her child's blood was green and sought out a clinic doctor to treat him showed that this woman was definitely not normal.
“Don't worry, as long as Li Cheng takes his medicine on time, he'll be normal after two or three courses of treatment,” Lin Jue reassured her.
Li Cheng's mother saw Lin Jue to the door and thanked him again before closing the door.
Lin Jue looked at the closed door, and the smile on his face gradually faded.
Both this mother and son were very strange.
When Li Cheng was talking to him earlier, he was constantly guiding him, making him think that his mother was the strange being that came out of the fog.
But Li Cheng never considered whether his mother was contaminated by a strange being, leading to her strange behavior and perceptions.
What made him so sure? Was Li Cheng hiding something?
Just as Lin Jue was about to leave, a man with dyed yellow hair came up the stairs. When he saw Lin Jue's attire, he paused slightly: “Are you here to see Zhang Yanmei for treatment?”
Zhang Yanmei was Li Cheng's mother's name.
Without waiting for Lin Jue to answer, the yellow-haired man sighed to himself: “That woman is so pitiful; she seems to have lost her mind recently. I always hear her talking to herself in the house.”
Alone?
“What did she say?” Lin Jue pressed.
“I didn't hear clearly.” The yellow-haired man shook his head, opened the door next to Zhang Yanmei's house, and went inside.
As the door slammed shut, Lin Jue suddenly understood.
He knew why Li Cheng was so sure.
There was indeed something that came out of the fog in the house, but it wasn't Zhang Yanmei.
It was Li Cheng.
He was the strange being that caused Zhang Yanmei to be contaminated.
The yellow-haired man didn't know there was a 'son' in Zhang Yanmei's house, which was why he thought Zhang Yanmei was talking to herself.
“He was guiding me in the wrong direction. Once I believe his mother is the strange being, then my perception will be skewed.”
“After my perception is skewed, he might be able to contaminate me.”
“So, this is the secret between you two.”
Lin Jue adjusted his glasses and walked down the stairs step by step.
[Plot Three has been filmed]
[Plot Four is in preparation for filming]
When he reached the stairwell and came outside the apartment building, he turned his head to look up.
Li Cheng was sitting at the desk in the room, looking through the window, tilting his head expressionlessly, staring at him.
