Two Worlds: I studied at Hogwarts
#16 - Make a magic wand
The second class in the afternoon was Transfiguration.
Perhaps because the Deputy Headmaster had to strictly maintain school discipline, Professor McGonagall's expression became very serious as soon as class started.
"Transfiguration is the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn in your courses at Hogwarts."
Professor McGonagall looked around, her sharp eyes scanning everyone.
"Anyone who is mischievous or disruptive in my class will be asked to leave, and will never be allowed back in, I have warned you!"
This had a surprisingly good effect, and the young wizards all sat up straight, not daring to speak in class.
However, the serious atmosphere did not last long. When Professor McGonagall turned the lectern into a pig, and then back again.
All the young wizards exclaimed in surprise, and Moon was no exception.
Especially when he saw Professor McGonagall holding her wand and chanting the spell, the wizard bar above his head instantly changed to six bars.
"Alright, turning an object into an animal requires a long time to practice, this week you only need to master turning a match into a needle."
Professor McGonagall explained the basic rules of transfiguration, while handing out a match to each student.
She didn't speak quickly, but Moon still found it a little difficult to write down the key points she was saying.
Because there were some words he could read, but couldn't write, even though the words were right on the tip of his tongue, his mind just didn't know if the first letter should be 'P' or 'B'.
Listening to the rustling sound of his deskmate taking notes, Moon consciously put down his quill and began practicing the match-to-needle spell from 'A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration'.
Hermione turned her head and glanced at Moon, then pursed her lips and continued copying.
By the end of the class, only Hermione had completed the match-to-needle magic.
Moon had also completed... half of it.
Match head + needle tip.
When the bell rang to signal the end of class, Moon declined Harry and Ron's invitation to go to the Great Hall for dinner and instead looked at Hermione.
"Hermione, can I borrow your notes to copy?"
"Why didn't you write them down during class?"
"Because there are some words that are on the tip of my tongue, but I just can't write them."
"You're illiterate?"
Hermione looked over in surprise. She had felt last night that Moon's foundation was very poor, but she didn't expect it to be this bad.
"I can't say I don't recognize any words, at least I know some common words."
"Okay, then it seems 'Modern Magical Spelling' isn't enough, you also need an 'Oxford Reading Tree'."
"Can I find that in the library too?"
"No, it's my textbook from primary school."
Learning that Moon didn't have any off-campus purchasing channels, Hermione agreed to lend him her old textbook.
Moon didn't mind reading more books, especially since these books could help him learn magic quickly.
Attending class properly and reading carefully.
These were all things that Moon had to do in this world, but there was still one problem that plagued him.
What would he do when he returned to Xilin? There was no wand there.
Could the magic he learned at Hogwarts still be used in Xilin?
Right now, he only knew an unskilled Lumos and an incomplete Transfiguration.
But both of these required a wand.
......
This problem didn't bother Moon for long. As soon as he arrived at the library, he found a way to solve it.
No wonder there was a saying in Xilin: Books are the wisest advisors and the most patient teachers.
When Moon saw the thousands of bookshelves standing before him, his heart was deeply shaken.
There were probably more bookshelves here than there were trees in the hazelnut forest he guarded, and the number of books probably exceeded the annual yield of hazelnuts.
"It's shocking, isn't it? I saw in a book that the collection here is the largest in the entire wizarding world," Hermione whispered in Moon's ear.
"There should be magic here, right?" Moon asked curiously, looking at the space inside the library, which was far larger than it appeared from the outside.
"No loud noises in the library!"
As soon as Moon finished speaking, a witch in a black robe with a stern face and a hooked nose quickly walked over.
"No damaging the books, and no going to the Restricted Section."
Seeing that Moon was a new student, Madam Pince, the librarian, immediately gave him another reminder.
Moon covered his mouth and nodded to show he understood, and then began browsing in the public library area.
Here, Moon found many books about wands, but not many explained how to make them.
Regarding wands, the thing Moon remembered most clearly was what Ollivander had said.
The wand chooses the wizard.
But after studying the history of magic, Moon knew that wands were not born naturally, they were also made by wizards. Although he didn't understand what Ollivander meant, it didn't stop him from resolving to make a wand.
That's right, the way to solve the problem was to make a wand.
That way he could experiment in Xilin to see if the magic he learned at Hogwarts could be used.
Moon knew this process would be difficult, especially since he knew nothing about making wands.
But the magical knowledge in the library gave him the courage to dream.
When Moon came to the reading area with 'Modern Magical Spelling' and 'Wand Making and Maintenance', Hermione's small face showed a questioning expression.
"Why did you take this book?" Hermione gently pointed to 'Wand Making and Maintenance'.
"Um~, I thought I needed to take a look. Professor Flitwick said that if you want to cast spells, it's best to establish a close relationship with the wand, so you can use it with ease."
Moon explained very sincerely, but Hermione's reaction was different from others. She tilted her head and thought for a while, then turned and walked towards the book collection area.
"You have a point, then I'll borrow one too."
......
The author of 'Wand Making and Maintenance' was named Ollivander.
Moon guessed that this should be the grandfather of the wand shop owner, because this book was published two hundred years ago.
The book detailed a series of processes such as wand selection, material extraction, processing, embedding the wand core, and debugging.
The library closed at nine o'clock in the evening, and Moon had only read half of the content about wand selection. Even so, he had discovered many problems.
The book only recorded the characteristics of wood suitable for making wands, but it didn't say how to find wood with magical characteristics. It couldn't be that any tree would do.
"The answer to that question is probably an Ollivander family secret. If they wrote that in the book, the wand shop would probably go out of business," Hermione gave the most likely correct answer on the way back to the common room.
But that wasn't what Moon wanted, and now he was stuck again on the first step of making a wand.
The two talked as they arrived at the entrance of the common room. Just as the Fat Lady asked for the password, Hermione suddenly stopped and looked at Moon in confusion.
"You don't seem to have taken a detour?"
Moon couldn't keep up with the speed of Hermione's brain, until she looked at the spiral staircases that he understood.
"That's right, this is the closest route."
"How did you do it? This is only the second day of school!"
To get to the Gryffindor common room, you had to walk up many stairs. These stairs were not fixed, they were changing all the time, and even the older students often took the wrong way.
But Moon only took one day to remember the characteristics of all the stairs.
"After walking a road once, shouldn't you remember it?"
