Under the Red Dragon
#95 - The beginning of the conquest
The black dragon Rosani contracted her body like a big cat hugging its paws, curling into a ball. Her wide wings were pressed tightly against her body, and her vertical pupils, gleaming with a ghostly light, stared at the distant low hills, trying her best to conceal herself within the low bushes of the grassland.
The bright night was like water, spilling across the grassland. The river that cut through the grassland sparkled with moonlight, like a celestial river in the sky. The sound of the flowing water masked some of the agitation of the centaur warriors, who eagerly awaited the appearance of their prey.
These gnolls liked to be active at night, always hiding in caves under the hills during the day. This habit made it difficult for even dragons that occasionally flew across the sky to discover their tracks.
Moreover, even if the dragons discovered these gnolls, there was nothing they could do about it. The dragons could not possibly dig through these hills one by one, and then drag the gnolls out to deal with them.
It can only be said that every race that can survive in the wilderness has its unique survival skills.
The tall bodies of the centaur warriors were not suitable for entering this kind of terrain to fight. Letting those thin kobold and goblin warriors enter the caves would only be sending food and equipment to these ferocious gnolls.
These gnolls loved to eat these intelligent creatures, loved to hear their dying wails and screams. Their brutality was comparable to that of the red dragons.
The centaur warriors had thought about using fire to attack, piling wood and animal dung from the grassland in front of the gnoll caves, using thick smoke to force these gnolls out of the caves, and then eliminate them.
But after careful observation, the centaur warriors discovered that this continuous range of hills had more than two or three cave exits. Perhaps all the hills in this area had been tunneled through by these cunning gnolls, so the method of fire attack would naturally not work.
So Chiron chose to launch an attack at night.
Night was the gnolls' home field, but Chiron cleverly chose to act tonight, which was particularly bright. The stars in the sky were shining brightly, and the moonlight was like water. Even ordinary people could clearly see everything on the grassland, let alone these strong centaur warriors. They would not lose their advantage.
The black dragon Rosani and these dragon's kin did not wait too long. In the bright moonlight, figures of gnolls began to appear among the hills, one after another, as well as groups of hyenas enslaved by the gnolls, and also many trolls and hobgoblins.
These adult gnolls were mostly over two meters tall, and their weight was close to 300 jin(斤: a unit of weight in China, about 500 grams) according to their size. Their heads were like the hyenas they tamed.
The skin exposed outside the animal skin wrapping was greenish-gray or blackish-green, and most of them had dirty dark yellow or gray-red manes.
From the head, they looked like grassland hyenas, with yellow teeth and blood-red eyes or blue-white eyes.
The black dragon Rosani and the centaur warrior Chiron quietly poked their heads out of the low bushes to look. They were not those stupid kobolds. They knew how to accurately estimate the number of these gnolls.
"More than four hundred gnolls,"
After observing for a moment, the black dragon Rosani said, "But I didn't see any gnoll spellcasters. They should still be in the cave."
"According to the number of gnolls coming out to hunt for food, the number of people in this tribe is at least over a thousand, Lord Rosani," Chiron said, pointing to the gnolls that were becoming active in the distance.
"At the front are the strongest gnoll barbarian soldiers with bone chainmail and warhammers. Riding on hyenas are the thin gnoll scouts, trackers, and sentries with wooden bows. Their leaders and spellcasters have not moved out. It seems that this area is ruled by these gnolls."
Although they might face enemies several times their number, there was no fear on the faces of these centaur warriors. The ogre tribe of the past was even stronger than the centaurs, but they still fought with the ogres for nearly ten years.
What's more, these centaur warriors have now replaced their equipment, from bone-made arrowheads and wooden spears to ironware and leather armor. If the territory's production capacity was not insufficient for a while, Chiron would also like to put these centaur warriors in heavy armor.
"How is it, can you solve these gnolls?" The black dragon Rosani asked, turning her head.
"It is not difficult to solve these gnolls, but if the gnoll reinforcements hiding in the caves are drawn out, the warriors will definitely need to bleed." Chiron replied.
"Fighting for the dragon is the glory and duty of the dragon's kin," the centaur leader Carrie stated without hesitation. This was also what she thought in her heart. Perhaps these centaur warriors were the most loyal warriors to the dragon among the current kin.
Although those kobolds were loyal to the dragon, they were also prone to rout in the face of disadvantage or danger to their lives. This was the nature of the race, just as the kobolds were born to be the dragon's bootlickers, which was difficult to change.
As for those green-skinned goblins, they would have even less bottom line than the kobolds. Without the supervision of the kobolds, they might run away in the event of a real war. They cannot be called a rabble, but they are not much different from scattered soldiers.
"There are no warriors who can become strong without seeing blood. Only through the baptism of blood can these cavalrymen grow into unstoppable warriors," Chiron also agreed with Carrie's words.
The black dragon Rosani glanced over the centaur warriors behind her with firm eyes and gave the order,
"Go, do not disappoint the dragon's expectations. Let me see if your bravery is worth Chiron's attention. When you lure out the gnoll reinforcements, I will find a chance to cut off their escape route back to their lair."
Chiron took the order and led his centaur warriors and the kobold goblins who were lurking beside him, covering the mouths of the gray wolves, and quietly followed the gnoll team that had already moved forward into the distance.
In order not to be discovered by the gnolls' keen sense of smell, the centaur cavalry tracked against the wind, trailing far behind the gnoll team.
They did not take action when they saw the gnolls chasing prey along the way, until they were far away from the hills, when the leading Chiron instructed his warriors,
"You gray wolf cavalry spread out to block those gnolls who might escape. The rest of the centaurs will kill these gnolls with me, but leave some alive so that they can send out a signal for help, so as not to ruin my plan to wipe them out in one fell swoop."
"Yes," the centaur knights and gray wolf knights replied in unison. A strong murderous aura suddenly rose in the quiet grassland under the moonlight.
"Charge," the centaur Chiron waved the black iron spear in his hand, pointing to the gnolls in front who were indulging in killing prey, and his four hooves gradually galloped.
The kobolds and green-skinned goblins riding gray wolves also waved their short spears and shouted wildly, scattering to the rear, encircling the gnolls' retreat.
Rumbling,
Two hundred powerful centaur knights lined up in an offensive formation, their four hooves trampling the grassland, the turf flying, galloping away like a rushing mountain torrent, moving forward without hesitation.
This movement stirred up countless ripples in the calm grassland, and countless animals hiding in the bushes and low forests were startled and fled from their hiding nests.
Those gnolls also discovered the centaur warriors galloping towards them, but they felt that they had the advantage in numbers and were not afraid.
Gnolls themselves prefer to attack when they have a numerical advantage, using human wave tactics and their strong strength to drown their opponents.
Therefore, these gnolls felt that their prey had arrived tonight, and their brutal and bloodthirsty nature made their beast pupils light up. Under the leadership of the gnoll barbarian captain, they charged towards the centaur knights instead.
"Kill these centaurs, and you can have a full meal tonight, sucking their blood and marrow," the gnoll barbarian leader waved his heavy double-headed flail and drove his gnolls to launch an attack.
The trolls and hobgoblins in the team also waved their big sticks and roared and rushed up. These creatures are the gnolls' allies when the numbers are equal, and the gnolls' slaves and spare food when the numbers are small. Under the gnolls' drive, these creatures also erupted their bestiality.
Boom,
The two teams collided together, and a faint brilliance surged throughout the centaur Chiron's body. His muscles swelled up, and the dense dragon scales covering his body were also stretched open by the swollen muscles, like exploding scales.
"Kill you," the tall gnoll barbarian soldier pounced up, waving a bone rod made of the thigh bone of some creature.
The powerful force allowed the gnoll to easily leap over the height of the centaur, and the bone rod struck down with a whistling wind, trying to shatter the centaur's head.
Chiron was not afraid, his thick arms surged with brilliance, wrapping the thick iron spear, and the unstoppable sharpness directly pierced through the gnoll barbarian soldier who was pouncing up.
The brilliance on the spear instantly surged, blasting the gnoll hanging on the spear from the chest and abdomen. The gnoll's body exploded into two halves, and the waving weapon lost its power support and fell to the ground.
"Kill you all," the rest of the gnolls also pounced on both sides of the centaur team, and their bodies, which were not weaker than the centaurs, burst out with powerful strength, trying to kill these centaurs.
Carrie and Drogo, who followed Chiron on both sides, also inherited the centaur's inheritance. Although the time was short, they were still much stronger than before. They held the spears in their hands tightly and charged. The powerful force and the momentum of running made the spear an incredibly terrifying weapon.
Puchi, Carrie waved the spear in her hand, knocking down the troll's bone rod. The spear swept across the troll's body and galloped away. The troll screamed and covered the gap exposed on his neck with both hands, but was then pierced by the centaur warrior's spear behind Carrie.
The long iron spear was more like a long stick in Drogo's hand, waving in his thick arms, smashing the hobgoblin's head, and red and white sauce flowed from the hobgoblin's head.
The hobgoblin, who was strong enough to survive, had not died for a while, and was panting on the ground, but was immediately trampled by the cavalry behind him, turning into minced meat and blood mud.
These centaur knights easily pierced through these gnolls wearing animal skins with their spears, skewering the gnolls on the spears like wild fruits, and then the spear tips slid down, shaking off the gnolls' bodies, and continued to charge forward.
The collision between the gnolls and the centaurs instantly created a **** battlefield on this cyan grassland, and countless splashing blood and minced meat stained the land under their feet red.
Most of them were the gnolls' flesh and blood, and only a few unlucky centaurs were injured when they became the target of multiple gnolls. The impact and speed of the cavalry made it difficult for these gnolls to bite.
Under the leadership of the powerful Chiron and the other centaur warriors, the centaur cavalry easily pierced through the gnolls' team. Even those strong gnoll barbarian soldiers could not resist this formation of cavalry offensive.
In just a simple round of impact, nearly half of these gnolls died. The leader of the gnoll barbarian soldiers was so frightened that his tail was caught when he saw the centaur cavalry passing through his camp.
"Run, these centaurs' weapons are too powerful, we have to go back and tell the leader."
It howled, letting the rest of the gnolls flee in all directions, and it also mixed in with the fleeing gnolls and ran towards the hilly lair.
The gnolls desperately fled, while shouting loudly,
"Howooo,"
This was a signal for help and warning. The rest of the gnolls also howled, and for a time the grassland was full of jackal sounds.
But death followed them closely. The centaur cavalry that broke through the gnolls' camp regrouped and turned around under Chiron's adjustment. They were not human cavalry who needed to adjust and control their horses. They were one step further than the combination of humans and horses, so their speed of regrouping far exceeded that of human cavalry.
The centaur cavalry followed behind the gnolls, staring at their prey like death. When these gnolls were about to approach the hills and the signal for help was enough to be conveyed, they launched a charge again.
The gnolls in front could no longer care about the centaur cavalry behind them, because the kobold knights and goblins who were good at fighting headwind battles were blocking them.
These two creatures are more fierce and brutal than any race in headwind battles, and they also like to torture their opponents more.
These goblins and kobolds riding gray wolves twice their size cunningly roamed around, and the short bows and short spears in their hands were desperately thrown out, filling the limbs of these gnolls with arrows and short spears.
The garbage that used to be weak in the eyes of the gnolls and could be pinched to death with one hand became a deadly murderer, and one after another gnolls fell on the way back to their nests.
Blood spilled all over the grassland along the way. They widened their eyes and looked at the bright moon in the sky. The eyes that still had light were unwilling and humiliated. They died in the hands of these green-skinned goblins and kobolds, and they died with their eyes closed.
