Game of Thrones: I Created the Magic Web
#196 - Three golden roses
“Lord Lancel Lannister.”
Looking at the Highgarden army slowly approaching, Joffrey calmly questioned.
“You reported that yesterday evening's meeting went smoothly and that you had reached an agreement with Lady Olenna. Are we and Highgarden not truly at peace? Or is this some kind of special welcoming ceremony?”
Everyone looked at the "Knight of Flowers."
Lancel Tyrell repeatedly denied, “There must be some oversight, there must be. Your Majesty, please be patient and allow me to negotiate and find out what's going on.”
Lancel could only give assurances, “Your Majesty, Highgarden is definitely not your enemy.”
He knew nothing about this.
As the King's messenger and governor, Lancel arrived at Highgarden earlier than the troops, allowing him to have a long night of conversation with his family before the King's arrival, and finally finalized the family's decision.
Wasn't it all agreed?
Marry his sister Margaery to King Joffrey, Highgarden would submit to the Iron Throne again, give up all resistance, support the King's new policies, in exchange for the family's pardon for participating in the rebellion, and Lord Renly's life.
Although Sansa's engagement with the King would not be dissolved, and Margaery could not be the one and only queen;
Although the King demanded a lot of wealth;
Although Highgarden lost some of its autonomy, and the order of succession of rule had been pried open;
Although the reputation was damaged.
But at least, the family could continue, Highgarden would not become a ruined disaster, and the Tyrells would still be the leaders of the Reach. Nothing more could be asked for.
However, what is this now?
Did they really intend to attack King Joffrey, with just these 20,000 ordinary new troops?
Wasn't the information I revealed clear enough?
Lancel looked around.
Thousands of guardsmen had stopped, and each squad and platoon were forming their own defensive formations and connecting with each other. The formation seemed loose, but it was strong enough for the guardsmen, and their efficiency in killing enemies was extremely high.
Even in close combat, no ordinary army could match them.
What's more, the warlocks had gathered near the baggage train. The pre-prepared steel was beside them, and in just a few breaths, hundreds of artillery pieces would be born in the hands of the warlocks, firing steel and flames.
At this distance, the artillery shells could even directly hit Highgarden.
How could they show hostility at this time?!
They must be stopped!
Seeing that the King did not object, Lancel immediately kicked his horse and quickly rushed forward.
“Stop, stop everyone!”
Lancel reined in his horse in front of the team and shouted urgently.
The knight leading the team raised his right arm to signal the army to stop. The knights around him obediently pulled on the reins, and the knights covering their faces opened their visors.
The atmosphere of the team was fairly calm.
Lancel breathed a slight sigh of relief, it seemed that the situation had not reached the worst point.
Then why?
He looked forward suspiciously, all familiar faces.
The family's guard captain - Ser Aegon Lywell, Highgarden's instructor - Ser Fortimor Crane, Lord Titus Peake of Starpike, his cousin Olenna's husband - Ser Leo Blackbar…
In the middle was his second brother, Garlan Tyrell.
His second brother wore his personal coat of arms - two golden roses on a green field.
Then I should be three golden roses.
Three golden roses. The governor of Highgarden knew that he probably didn't have this honor.
The governor and Garlan Tyrell looked at each other.
His second brother was taller, stronger, and had a beard. He was smiling.
The "valiant" Garlan.
His second brother was much better at swordsmanship than him, and he never got injured when sparring with half a dozen soldiers at the same time. Perhaps few in the Seven Kingdoms could compare with him.
However, personal bravery is always insignificant in war, and will be even more humble in the future.
The governor tried to show momentum.
“Garlan, what did Grandmother ask you to do? Why did you bring the army? If His Majesty the King gets angry, we can't bear the consequences!”
Garlan Tyrell smiled at his younger brother.
“Lancel, don't be nervous, it's just that Grandmother had a whim and tried to express Highgarden's warmest welcome and sincerity to His Majesty.”
“Besides.”
Garlan turned his head and looked back, “Where is the army? I only saw Highgarden's honor guard, peaceful, grand, and sincere.”
Just like that? Lancel had to wonder, “Just like that?”
Garlan rode his horse forward and patted Lancel on the shoulder, “Just like that. Highgarden's decision has not changed. Besides, how could we deceive you, brother.”
“His Majesty's arrival is Highgarden's supreme honor.”
Garlan's eyes were complicated, “Go back and report to His Majesty. All is well, Highgarden is still His Majesty's loyal subject. Governor, sir.”
Lancel's breath stopped, and he felt something unusual from this sentence.
“Second brother, I…” He looked at Garlan deeply, with thousands of words in his heart, but when the words came to his mouth, they became a blank, and he couldn't say anything.
“Growing Strong.” His thoughts were chaotic, but the family's motto was still clear.
“Growing Strong.” Garlan responded with emotion.
“Go.”
Lancel looked around, and the familiar faces seemed to become much stranger in an instant, not just simple expressions or actions, but something deeper.
He raised his head and looked up at the white and elegant Highgarden in front of him.
From the time he could remember, Highgarden had always been so clean and beautiful, it had never changed, and perhaps it would not change after countless years.
I'm home.
The dazzling castle gradually blurred in his vision, as if it had turned into a dream.
Am I really home?
Tyrell, Highgarden, Governor, Golden Rose.
Finally, he turned his horse around and, under the gaze of everyone, galloped towards the King in the east…
“Honor guard.”
Joffrey nodded thoughtfully.
“I see.” Joffrey looked at the dazed Lancel, “Lady Olenna's hospitality is hard to refuse, but it's too sudden.”
Are you testing my bottom line? Do you want to maintain Highgarden's independence?
“Lancel.”
Joffrey's tone was slightly dissatisfied, “As the governor, you have the main responsibility.”
“I know you lack experience, so I'll let it go this time. But if anything happens in the future, you must handle it with care and report it in advance, understand?”
Lancel was silent and knelt on one knee.
A servant led a white horse. Joffrey mounted the horse, “Continue moving forward.”
The guardsmen returned to their marching posture, lined up in twenty rows, with dozens of people in each row moving forward in sync. The baggage and carts walked at the end of the team.
Lancel knelt blankly on the green grass.
"The Bold" Barristan slowly walked to his side and sighed silently.
He smelled a familiar sadness and confusion from Lancel. Compared to Highgarden's attitude, many people in the Selmy family found it more difficult to accept his return, as if he were a complete outsider.
In fact, if he hadn't voluntarily given up his inheritance many years ago, he would have already become the head of Harvest Hall, with children and grandchildren.
But, no one is willing to mention the old things anymore.
"The Bold" Barristan helped Lancel up, “There are many forks in the road of life, and each choice will lead us to different paths. Retreat is no longer possible, the only thing we can do is move forward.”
“You and I are the same.”
Lancel remembered the captain's warning and restrained his chaotic thoughts.
“Highgarden's golden roses are in full bloom.”
Lancel showed a fragile smile, “I hope you like them.”
