#45 - The Wedding of Khal Drogo
Chapter 45 The Wedding of Khal Drogo
In accordance with Dothraki tradition.
The wedding of Khal Drogo and Princess Daenerys was held on an open space in the grasslands outside Pentos.
Daenerys was filled with fear.
The Dothraki actually believed that all important events in life should be witnessed by the heavens, including weddings and honeymoons.
How could it be like this?
She was afraid from the bottom of her heart.
Afraid of this wedding that hadn't asked for her opinion from beginning to end;
Afraid of the man sitting next to her, speaking the rough language of the nomadic people that she couldn't understand, and he hadn't even looked at her much;
Afraid of everything she would be forced to endure in some open space after the sun went down.
Confusion, fear, and the unknown enveloped her.
In the end, she was just a thirteen-year-old girl.
This was not the wedding scene she had imagined.
More than 40,000 strangely behaving and barbaric "guests" were reveling and feasting below, with more women, children, slaves, and countless livestock surrounding this temporary open-air palace.
She looked up and saw nothing but strange foreign men and women with bare chests under the high platform, adorned with leather clothing, horsehair, and bronze, eating horse meat and drinking mare's milk.
Everyone was gorging themselves on the grass and land, and they would start pushing and shoving each other at the slightest disagreement.
She only felt lonely in the noise.
Although Khal Drogo was laughing and shouting in the main seat on the high platform, the object was not her, the bride at hand, but the blood riders below.
No one talked to her, as if she didn't exist.
She looked down at Illyrio and her brother sitting below, close enough to see her brother's increasingly unhappy expression, yet too far away to say a word.
And Ser Jorah next to her brother, he seemed even more serious than usual.
Did he also dislike this wedding?
The drums rumbled, and women with bare chests danced a strange and wild dance for the Khal in front of the high platform.
The bride quickly looked away and tried to ignore this scene.
Another Dothraki approached the dancer, then two, three, until two men grabbed the same woman.
Strange shouts came from the mouths of the two warriors.
In the blink of an eye, two arakh blades stretched out from their sheaths, and the dazzling white light flickered with the shadows of the blades.
This weapon has a scythe-like curved blade, and almost every Dothraki warrior carries them, she had seen countless of them in less than half a day.
Now, she had also seen its sharpness and danger.
After a few breaths of dazzling white light colliding, the arc of the knife slashed across one person's waist, and the spine and abdomen were immediately cut in half, almost breaking in the middle.
The man then fell to the ground, and red and green internal organs flowed onto the ground, covered with a layer of dust.
No one stopped this blood feud.
Governor Illyrio had reminded her in advance: "Any Dothraki wedding is considered a failure if it doesn't result in at least three deaths."
She had a premonition that today's wedding would probably involve more than three deaths.
The slaves carried away the corpse, but the other warriors were still in high spirits, and the winner casually pulled over a dancer to enjoy.
The wedding went on as usual.
A servant slowly walked towards the high platform carrying dishes.
Khal Drogo and the princess were the first to choose food, and then it was the governor and Viserys' turn.
Viserys' self-esteem was hurt again and again with each round of food that was delivered. He himself didn't think Khal Drogo was of a higher status than him, let alone his sister sitting above him.
"Your Majesty, please rest assured, this is just a courtesy to the owner of the wedding, Khal naturally understands how honorable you are."
Elin persuaded Viserys while presenting the dishes.
Elin didn't want the beggar king's momentary impulse to ruin the wedding, his plan still needed time.
Viserys immediately believed it, "I knew it, Drogo is still sensible, I am the King of the Seven Kingdoms, of course he should understand the hierarchy."
"Humph! For the sake of my sister's wedding, I will let him off this time."
Elin nodded silently in agreement, secretly rejoicing that the beggar king's voice was not loud enough, and Khal Drogo did not understand the Common Tongue of Westeros.
Unlike the princess, Elin was very satisfied with today's wedding.
The messy layout on the grassland, the grass-woven palace, the simple high platform, various wedding rituals, and the guests who were allowed to carry knives and swords everywhere.
Death was not surprising.
Elin knew how to use the power here.
Drogo's khalasar was huge.
Forty thousand warriors and countless women, children, and slaves were all gathered on this grassland, and the consumption of supplies and management difficulty was huge.
Of course, Drogo could not personally handle all the affairs, he had deputies to manage his tribe, these people were "Kos", responsible for commanding the various "Khas" under the khalasar.
With the Khal at the head and the various Kos as assistants, the power exerted by the 40,000 warriors was enough to make Pentos tremble.
The Pentos governors doubled the city's defenses for this reason. But no one dared to guarantee how effective this would be.
As everyone knows, Pentos is the weakest of the Free Cities.
The peace agreement with the Braavosi stipulates that the Pentos people must not possess more than 20 warships, must not hire mercenaries, contract with free mercenary groups, or maintain any army beyond the city guard.
What's the use of just having huge city walls?
Thank you for the Crown Prince's guidance. Elin decided to use this substantial inequality and contradiction between the Dothraki and Pentos.
The dishes had been served.
Elin and Jorah Mormont looked at each other and left silently.
Now it was Jorah's turn to worry.
In just a few days, Jorah felt that he had spent more energy than in the previous few years.
Varys the Spider's task for him was to lurk around the Dragon siblings and pass on information, but he didn't ask him to do anything proactively.
A very good deal, but the Spider probably won't live long. Jorah still believed more in the power of the Iron Throne.
Elin.
This Crown Prince's attendant was much more troublesome. He wanted him to be a matchmaker, he wanted him to kill people, he wanted him to protect.
His gaze turned to the Kos on the other side. Bono, Jhaqo, these two Kos didn't directly kill Elin, did Drogo know?
Jorah touched the hilt of the sword at his waist. I hope less blood will be shed today, let alone my blood.
The sun was gradually setting in the west.
Khal Drogo stood up and clapped his hands, and all the drums, shouts, and feasting noises stopped abruptly.
Drogo helped Daenerys up. The ceremony of presenting the bride price began.
Viserys walked forward with three maids.
Two were Dothraki with apricot eyes, black hair and brown skin, and one was a Lyseni girl with blond hair and blue eyes.
"Good sister, these are not ordinary slaves,"
