Green Monster Epic
#20 - Split the spoils 2
Although Allen didn't know what magic these glittering metals, which couldn't be used to make weapons, possessed that made humans pursue them so frantically, he had discovered during his interactions with humans that these things held a pivotal position in civilized society. Therefore, from the very beginning, he had decided to collect these things and then slowly study their uses.
Although his previous distribution had somewhat frustrated Phil, seeing that the other party wasn't overly agitated indicated that these things, which he considered useless and difficult to preserve, might not be as worthless as he had imagined. However, he didn't feel like he was losing out too much, at least that's what the other party's expression told him.
"Regis brothers, this time I must thank you for your help. Consider these gifts from me to everyone, please don't refuse."
Allen counted out 20 high-quality gold coins from a pile of glittering gold coins, along with a ruby as clear as blood and as large as a pigeon's egg, and put them all into a small cloth bag. He handed the bag with both hands to Regis, who had just come down from sweeping the battlefield and hadn't had time to tidy up his messy appearance.
Looking at the money bag Allen handed over, not only was Regis a little at a loss, but even Phil, the human merchant leader next to Allen, was staring at this green-skinned goblin with a complex expression, as if watching a rare animal.
In the short half-day of contact, it wasn't just Allen who was probing and observing humans. In fact, Phil and Regis were also secretly observing this seemingly different hobgoblin. From the brief exchanges, Phil and the others had already formed a preliminary understanding of Allen: this was a hobgoblin who had grown up in a closed environment, possessed some intelligence but lacked basic knowledge of the outside world, let alone normal interpersonal relationships.
However, in such a short period of time, the other party had learned to make such a move, although it seemed somewhat crude, it was enough to make Phil and Regis look at him with new respect. Given time, once the other party truly came into contact with the outside world, no one could predict how far he would grow.
"This isn't very good, is it? We just fulfilled our responsibility as mercenaries…"
It would be a lie to say that Regis wasn't tempted. Three members of the 12-man team had died so far, and two others were seriously injured. Although they had expected this, the Eagle Mercenary Corps didn't provide much in the way of compensation for funeral arrangements or disability retirement. However, with the gift Allen gave Regis, he would be able to give the deceased and injured members of his team a satisfactory explanation.
"Just take it! You were originally only protecting the safety of the trade caravan. Now, having you help attack the gnoll camp has already exceeded your responsibilities, and I'm embarrassed!"
Manager Phil retracted his complex expression, put on a smile again, and helped Allen persuade him.
"That's right, without your help, our tribesmen would have suffered a lot more damage!"
"Then I'll accept it, thank you Chief Allen."
Regis was a straightforward person. Seeing that Allen and Phil were both persuading him, he didn't act coy like a little woman. He simply took the money bag from Allen's hand.
"That's right! It's a pity that our tribe's beautiful camellia isn't here, otherwise, I would have prepared to have Camellia serve you well in Brother Regis's tent tonight! But don't worry, I'll call all the females present over later, and you and your brothers can choose whoever you like. Just tell me who you fancy."
Allen thought he was doing a good job of winning people's hearts, but he didn't expect to add an unnecessary flourish at the end. When he realized it later, he couldn't help but laugh and also felt it was quite interesting.
"No need, absolutely no need! We appreciate your kindness, Chief. I still have something to deal with, goodbye!!"
Hearing Allen's arrangement, Regis, who had previously changed his opinion of him, immediately looked crestfallen. He quickly shook his head and waved his hands repeatedly, then fled in a fluster.
Allen watched the other party run away as if flying, feeling inexplicable. He happened to see Manager Phil covering his mouth and snickering out of the corner of his eye. Afraid of neglecting the other party, he quickly added an invitation: "Since Brother Regis has something to do, how about Manager Phil and I go have some fun together? It's really boring to have nothing to do at night."
"No, no! I still have to carefully count and sort out these items on the ground, so I won't disturb you, Chief, from having fun!! Hey, is it so difficult to find a few empty boxes???"
Phil, who was originally watching the show, didn't expect to get burned immediately. Thinking of the hobgoblin's foul breath and furry body, which completely didn't conform to human aesthetics of beauty, he felt as if he were naked in a freezing ice cellar, shivering all over. He quickly found an excuse and fled after Regis, even forgetting to keep an eye on the spoils on the ground.
"Alas, what a pity!"
At this time, Allen, who was not yet fully mature, still only had the concept of females being for hugging. He didn't understand the mysteries involved. He had only heard humans joking about females on the road, and he thought that humans liked these things, so he learned and applied it on the spot. Now it seemed that it didn't have any effect.
After having someone collect the gold, silver, and jewelry in a box and carry it to a wooden house in the camp that Allen had taken a fancy to, Allen snuggled up to the box and went to sleep, until the next day when the camp became lively again.
The industriousness of humans exceeded Allen's expectations. In the Greenwild Tribe, Allen believed that if he woke up second earliest, no one would dare to claim first. However, when he was groggily awakened by the sound of various objects colliding and humans shouting and talking, and then walked out of the wooden house where he was resting, the humans in the camp were already busy working.
The mercenaries who still had mobility, led by Regis, were taking care of the weapons in their hands, restoring the sharpness of the weapons that had become dull during yesterday's battle; Manager Phil was leading people to re-sort the spoils, searching for items that might have been missed last night, while also not forgetting to prepare breakfast.
On the other hand, the hobgoblins, who were the masters of the place, were nowhere to be seen at this time, except for Stone and a few others who had been arranged by Allen to stand guard at night. Allen could guess without much thought that the tribesmen were definitely hiding somewhere, sleeping soundly.
"These useless things!!"
Allen felt that he had lost face in front of the humans. He cursed the tribesmen in his heart, then adjusted his mood and put on what he thought was the most amiable smile, and walked towards Regis and his group not far away.
"Oh, Brother Regis, you guys woke up really early!"
"Chief Allen, good morning!"
It seemed that Regis had told his team members about the money Allen had given him last night. When they saw Allen greeting them at this time, the mercenaries on the opposite side all put on friendly smiles and responded warmly to Allen.
