Green Monster Epic

#62 - Investigation

Chapter 62: Reconnaissance

“Jack, I'll pay you another 1 gold coin to scout out the situation at the goblin camp ahead, how about it?”

Having spent some time together on this journey, Jack's identity as a Stalker was accidentally discovered by Allen one night. After being relentlessly questioned by Allen, Jack had no choice but to reveal his identity and demonstrate some of his Stalker skills. However, Allen didn't learn about his advancement to Shadow Walker, which put Jack somewhat at ease.

After this discovery, Allen became even more blatant in ordering Jack around. After all, he had spent a lot of money to hire this person, so it wouldn't be right not to exploit their abilities, right? Whenever anything unusual was discovered ahead, or if wild beasts blocked the way, Allen would unhesitatingly send Jack to scout ahead and lure the beasts away.

Now that they were about to enter the territory of the Bonecrusher Camp, and without the mercenary companions of Regis's group, Allen felt that leading such a group of people through their territory was somewhat unsafe. Therefore, he decided to have Jack take another trip to see how things were with the Bonecrusher tribe.

“Alright!”

For the sake of the gold coin, and also having enough confidence in his own strength, the small goblin Jack readily agreed. Immediately, his short legs began to run, quickly disappearing in the direction Allen pointed.

Seeing Jack leave, Allen didn't waste any time. He took out a whetstone and carefully sharpened the blade of his beloved weapon, as there might be a need for it soon. At the same time, he didn't forget to call over the dozen or so hobgoblins and earth goblins he had just recruited, preparing to give them a pep talk.

“Everyone, have you been doing well these days?”

Allen didn't start off too sternly, but greeted these dozen or so fellows with a smile.

“Good, good, good.”

“Lord, good person, I obedient.”

These fellows were still as inarticulate as Da Shan and the others before they left the tribe. They were still very weak in expressing their emotions, but Allen, who was already used to this kind of communication, didn't feel any obstacles and nodded to show that he understood.

“It's good that you're obedient. Do you still want to be able to eat a full meal every day?”

“Yes!!!”

The answer was crisp, neat, and tidy. Just hearing the words 'full meal,' a group of fellows with varying heights had a few drops of saliva hanging from the corners of their mouths, which made Allen frown slightly.

Of the 13 hobgoblins and earth goblins bought from the slave merchant, only 8 were adult males, with the remaining 3 being females and 2 being underage cubs. In addition, Allen hadn't purchased any weapons at Thornsburg or Thunder Town because the tribe had some spoils of war left over. If a battle really broke out when crossing the kobold's territory, the combat power that these goblins could exert would probably be minimal. As for those short goblins, Allen didn't consider them at all, never thinking that they could have any effect in battle.

Perhaps when the battle was unfavorable, Allen would use these goblins as pawns to disrupt the kobolds' pursuit.

“If you want to eat your fill, you have to pay the price. Next, we will cross a kobold tribe. Once we cross this tribe, it will be our tribe's territory, so it will depend on everyone's performance at that time.”

“If a battle breaks out with the kobolds, whoever can cut down a kobold and cut off their nose, then I will reward them with 5 pounds of grain when we return to the tribe. Remember, one kobold nose is worth 5 pounds, with no upper limit.”

Allen's speech also attracted the attention of Da Shan, Hua She, A Xiao, and other tribesmen who had set up camp. Hearing Allen's remarks at this time, not only were the newcomers, who were the main target of the mobilization, excited, but Da Shan and the others were also tempted.

“Chieftain, if we kill the enemy and cut off their noses, will we have the same reward?”

Hua She had been very close to Allen these days. Because of his talent, Allen valued him very much. Allen would also take him along to train on the way, and teach him some of the combat skills he had learned from Regis and the others. His combat power had greatly improved. According to Allen's estimation, Hua She at this time might be able to compete with Shi Tou, who stayed behind in the tribe. As for the 10 tribesmen who set out with the team, Hua She was now vaguely the strongest, followed by Da Shan.

“Everyone will have it, as long as any one of you has a harvest, I will never go back on my word!!! The grain is in our cart, and I don't lack that little bit!!!”

Allen patted his chest to guarantee, his eyes constantly sweeping over the excited tribesmen, and then he recalled the idea he had discussed with Phillip before, and it seemed to be useful.

The Green Field Tribe had long been short of food, with basically no surplus, so it had always implemented a distribution system, which was based on the individual strength of the tribesmen to distribute a day's ration. Except for the strongest chieftain who could store food, no other tribesman was allowed to store food privately, nor was it possible.

And before, Allen asked Phillip how to unite the hearts of the tribesmen, so that they would not be too lazy and cunning during battle, and stimulate their desire to fight. Phillip initially gave a vague answer to fool him. Later, Allen brought up the old topic again and discussed with Phillip whether there were other means. Finally, Phillip proposed an idea to Allen based on the system of the human kingdom, which was to use rewards to stimulate the tribesmen's fighting will.

Of course, the deeper level of thinking was to implement private ownership, family life system, and so on in the Green Field Tribe. Phillip himself was only half-knowledgeable about these primitive human societies, and he used them to fool Allen, which made Allen, the country bumpkin, listen with a face full of approval, and prepared to start the tribe's reform with this after returning to the tribe.

There were still nearly 6,000 pounds of grain left in the vehicle. If it could be safely transported back to the tribe, then it would be enough for the tribe to not lack food for at least half a year in the future, giving Allen enough time to reform. At the same time, it was a bit wasteful to just keep so much grain in his own hands. Allen was preparing to take the opportunity of the combat incentive system to distribute a small portion of it, so that everyone could see that Allen himself really kept his word, and those who received the incentive would be envied and jealous by others after owning private property.

The purpose of the family life system was to imitate what Phillip said, to cultivate the connection of blood ties among the tribesmen, and then use their family affection as a threat at the beginning of the battle, which could better stimulate the tribesmen's will to fight to the death. Otherwise, with the goblins' slippery fighting style, Allen really couldn't count on the tribesmen to achieve the military strength of the Thunder Tribe and the Elf Thornsburg.

“You can see clearly, this is 5 pounds of grain, enough for one person to eat and drink for 2 days!!”

Allen was even worried that the tribesmen had no concept of rewarding grain, so he specially prepared a bag of about 5-6 pounds of grain, held it high in his hand, so that the tribesmen could see clearly. As the cloth bag swayed in the air, the grain rubbed in the bag, making a rustling sound, making the tribesmen, who had always had rich experience of going hungry due to lack of food, have golden eyes, and their throats and noses made a gurgling sound.
