Hogwarts: Wizards of Eternity
#77 - Dumbledore: I Don't Want to Die (4/5, please order first)
Faced with Roger's invitation,
Dumbledore was very hesitant.
Anyone with a brain could see that this was the next wave of the era surging in.
Should he fuel it?
What would this wave turn the world into?
Refuse?
In any case, Dumbledore was a wizard.
For thousands of years, countless pioneers of wizarding civilization had stumbled forward in the wilderness, constantly encountering obstacles and summarizing paths of experience.
Now, finally, a young wizard was standing on the shoulders of the giants of the past, offering a new possibility, how could he bear to extinguish it?
While struggling, Albus Dumbledore was not seeking wisdom from the portraits hanging in the Headmaster's office at Hogwarts, portraits containing fragments of the thoughts of previous headmasters.
He thought of another figure.
An old friend he had imprisoned for many years.
A— a Seer!
“This is not a small matter, please allow me some time to consider it.” Dumbledore's choice was neither to agree nor to refuse.
He wanted to ask another person who could see the future, to get some reference information from him.
Speaking of which, it had been many years since he had last seen him.
Whenever Grindelwald was mentioned, Dumbledore always felt a sense of melancholy, but this matter was of such great importance that he felt it was necessary to make a trip.
“If you think it over, you can come and find me at any time.” Although Roger was eager for Dumbledore to join, he was not impatient.
The world would continue to operate without anyone, and Dumbledore was one of the strongest wizards in the world.
That didn't mean that there were no other powerful wizards in the world besides Dumbledore.
The world was vast, and human history was long.
For magic, if it was just a matter of living a few more years, it was not that difficult—as long as you didn't insist on immortality or anything like that, and make yourself even tougher than a cockroach.
Having exchanged what needed to be exchanged, the two began to return.
Of course, before leaving, they also dealt with the scene to avoid any complications.
There was nothing to say on the way back.
Roger deliberately chose a particularly remote place and used magic to shield the area and eliminate the radiation.
Back on the Pacific island nation, the relevant personnel there didn't even know what had happened.
If someone carefully investigated afterwards, they might be able to find a clue, but it would be difficult to verify what exactly happened at that time.
Unless they used the long-term time-travel magic that had already been banned.
Back at Hogwarts, Roger continued his usual routine in the library, the laboratory, and guiding Harry, discussing magical creature breeding with Hagrid, not focusing his energy on unnecessary things.
Today was December 26th, and the second semester would start sometime after January.
During this time, Roger didn't have to attend classes.
In fact, even if he did have classes, it wouldn't delay Roger in any way.
Roger's progress in learning magic had far surpassed his classmates, and he couldn't ask the teacher to teach more advanced things in class because of that.
Otherwise, how would the other students learn?
So, during class, Roger usually thought about his own problems.
Conceiving in class, practicing after class, neither was delayed.
While Roger returned to his daily rhythm, Dumbledore, who had just returned to the school, was about to embark on a new journey to see his 'old friend' whom he hadn't seen for many years.
The Ministry of Magic official in charge of immigration was puzzled by Dumbledore's frequent trips abroad, but under the Minister's 'green light all the way' instruction, he signed the exit documents and contacted the relevant Austrian authorities.
With Dumbledore's international reputation and power, the Austrian side would naturally not set up obstacles without reason, and all approvals were quickly passed.
The flames of the Floo Network lit up again.
Nurmengard Castle, the building Grindelwald built when he gathered a large number of elite wizards under the banner of “For the Greater Good” and stirred up trouble.
It stood tall among the mountains, looking very impressive.
This was normal, after all, its original purpose was to be Grindelwald's center of power, and also a place where Grindelwald imprisoned dissidents.
But unexpectedly, it eventually became Grindelwald's prison.
It had a sense of absurdity, like a political struggle failure resulting in being placed under house arrest in the palace for life, unable to leave half a step.
After many years, seeing this familiar building again, the illusion of countless past times echoed in Dumbledore's mind.
Pausing for a moment, Dumbledore gritted his teeth, forcibly broke through the melancholy in his heart, and strode forward.
He walked closer and closer, and as the distance shortened, he could feel a gaze watching him.
He looked up and saw an old man with white hair and beard, just like himself.
Although he was imprisoned, he kept his clothes neat and tidy, as if he knew Dumbledore was coming and had specially tidied up his appearance.
When the distance between them was only a few steps away, Dumbledore stopped.
After a few seconds of silence, Grindelwald spoke first: “You look much better than before.”
“Don’t you look the same?” The Grindelwald in front of him was very different from the last time Dumbledore saw him.
If the former Grindelwald was like a frustrated person who had to retreat to the mountains, only able to leisurely admire the southern mountains while picking chrysanthemums by the eastern fence, then the current Grindelwald gave Dumbledore the illusion that he was gradually returning to his youth.
“Because I discovered something interesting, so I suddenly felt that this world—? Hahahaha.”
“What about you?” Grindelwald asked, changing the subject.
“Nothing, just, I don’t want to die anymore.” Dumbledore replied in a calm tone.
Dumbledore was a powerful wizard, but he was never a happy person.
Losing his father, losing his sister, losing his friend, losing, losing, constantly losing—what made Dumbledore most sad was that many things were actually his own fault, many things he might have had the ability to recover, but he missed the opportunity.
Dumbledore's later life had been immersed in guilt.
Although his sense of responsibility prevented him from choosing to let go, his heart had been tormenting himself.
He longed for another great adventure after death.
Wizards at his level knew that there was an 'afterlife' in the world.
His deceased family members were all there.
But now, Dumbledore didn't think so much.
Because he really couldn't let go.
Dumbledore was afraid that if he didn't keep an eye on him, Roger would turn everything into another look!
He firmly believed that with Roger's ability, one day, he would also set foot in the 'afterlife', or even set foot in the 'afterlife' alive.
Then, he would not be at peace even after death.
“You’ve changed, Dumbledore.” Grindelwald stared at Dumbledore for a while and said with some melancholy.
“Compared to the image in my memory, you’ve changed, becoming more and more like that—the little Seer!” At the end of his words, Grindelwald's eyes changed from melancholy to sharp.
Whether from a personal point of view or from a magical point of view, this was not a small matter!
