Chapter 236 The travels of the little carrots ④
While the Traveling Five were offering incense to the Buddha in the main hall, in a room in the back hall, an old monk was sitting cross-legged and meditating and talking about Buddhism. His eyebrows are gray and his face is covered with wrinkles, but his eyes are still bright. Although the monk's robe looks a little shabby, it is still neat and clean, which makes the old monk's Dharma profound.
Beside the old monk, what came into view were four monks sitting on the ground, known as the Four Vajras. There are several pilgrims sitting on the futons below. They are listening carefully to the old monk's explanation of Buddhism. Although they were old and young, male and female, their eyes all revealed their piety and admiration for Buddhism.
The little novice Jingxin just poked his head outside and took a look. Seeing that the master was talking about Buddhism, he didn't dare to disturb him. He warned himself that he could only wait for a while to see again. However, he was quite happy that Uncle Wuchen was here. He would go to entertain the guests first.
Went to the main hall and led the five people towards the lay dormitory at the back. Anyway, there weren't many pilgrims coming today and there were a lot of empty rooms, so it was no problem for one person to have a room.
However, Wangcai, who followed him into the Gaoshan Temple, seemed quite uncomfortable. Perhaps it was because the incense ashes were inhaled into his nose and made him uncomfortable. He would sneeze or shake his head from time to time, but he lacked his usual alertness.
Of course, walking all the way back, you will definitely meet some monks in the temple. It is just a matter of saying hello with the young novice Jingxin leading the way.
Ordinary people have a saying that is good, there are people in the court who can do things easily. Soon one person arranged a secluded small room. Since the abbot is not free now, let's follow the young novice Jingxin to visit the Gaoshan Temple!
Coming out of the lay dormitory at the back and turning in another direction, what comes into view is a reclining Buddha the size of a house. This Buddha statue was carved by skilled craftsmen using natural boulders from the back mountain. Although it is backed by a mountain, it looks particularly solemn and solemn among the green mountains and green waters. The recumbent posture is leisurely and calm. His face has a spring-like smile, giving people a sense of peace and tranquility.
The young novice Jingxin said from the side: "This reclining Buddha is the last scene of Sakyamuni Buddha's reincarnation. I heard from Master that it has been hundreds of years."
The class representative said: The image of the reclining Buddha represents the last important moment in the Buddha's life: Nirvana and reincarnation. It symbolizes that the Buddha's practice has been completed, the results have been exhausted, and he will enter a state of no birth, no death, freedom and no hindrance. In the Han Dynasty, Nirvana is also called "Nirvana", which refers to the state in which eminent monks practice perfection and live in unimpeded silence. Of course, the nirvana of eminent monks also means life and death in the eyes of ordinary people. Because people in the world are taboo about talking about death, it is understandable that they are more cautious about worshiping the reclining Buddha.
Regarding this huge stone reclining Buddha statue, the four people from Majia Village, who had just left Majia Village, looked left and right, but they didn't have much impression. However, the little monk Wuchen took a step forward respectfully and muttered something incomprehensible. Buddha Dharma, then put your hands together and bow and it’s done.
Then, they came to a spacious courtyard. There is a towering tree in the center of the courtyard, and under the tree there is a huge stone with Buddhist scriptures densely carved on it.
Jingxin, a novice monk, explained: This is a "prayer stone" where pilgrims often turn prayer wheels to seek blessings from the Buddha.
The group of five continued to move forward and came to a quiet Zen room. There are neat rows of futons placed in the Zen room, and many calligraphy and paintings are hung on the walls. The young novice Jingxin told them that this is the place where the monks of Gaoshan Temple meditate and practice. Every morning and evening, they gather here to chant sutras and recite the Buddha's name.
Under the guidance of the Jingxin novice, several people visited the various buildings in the temple together. They walked out of the Vajra Halls with different shapes and came to a wall with a huge mural on it. This mural is different from other places. This mural shows an eagle standing on the arm of the Buddha, pecking at the flesh on the arm. The lines of the painting are smooth and the colors are rich. The painter skillfully used perspective to give the picture a three-dimensional feel. In addition, the painter also used delicate brushwork to express the Buddha's compassion for the common people and the eagle's eagerness to devour the heaven and earth, making the whole picture full of vividness and emotion.
Jingxin, a novice monk, introduced this to the five people who came to the temple for the first time: "This precious mural is the story in the Buddhist scriptures of the Buddha cutting off his flesh and feeding it to an eagle."
Little Zhao Yun looked up and asked in confusion: "Ah! Cutting meat to feed eagles? Cutting your own meat?"
Jingxin novice: "Yes, this mural tells a touching story. It is said that a long time ago, when the Buddha Sakyamuni was meditating under the Bodhi tree, a hungry eagle flew from the tree. The eagle may have been unable to find food for a long time. It was too hungry to stand on the top of the tree and fell to the ground unable to fly. When Buddha saw this scene, he felt pity and decided to cut off a piece of his own meat to feed the eagle. Feed a small piece The dying eagle was rescued, but the sober eagle flapped its wings out of fear and dared not approach. In order to allow the eagle to eat the meat, Buddha lifted his own meat further away from him until the eagle was full. Finally, The Buddha's wounds healed, and the eagle regained its original vitality."
The timid Ma Zhiyuan trembled involuntarily, "Hey, this Buddha is so cruel, he even dares to cut his own flesh!"
The young novice monk in Jingxin may be used to being asked, and thinks it is natural, or he did not hear the unspoken words, "Amitabha, this is the sacrifice of the body that the Buddha often said, and it is also an act of giving. Our Buddha is compassionate, sacrifices his life for righteousness, and teaches us to be compassionate. , care for all living beings. The story of Buddha cutting meat to feed an eagle is the best interpretation of this teaching. We should learn to respect and care for life, save all living beings, and be compassionate, like Amitabha."
We all felt that this mural was a bit intrusive, so we hurried forward, but the mural in front of us looked nothing special at first glance. It was a tiger lying in a bamboo forest, with a monk standing next to him with his hands folded and chanting sutras.
As expected, the details of the story of this mural made these little carrot heads feel creepy. This is actually the story of a tiger eating a man. Jingxin, a novice monk, described the story to everyone very carefully:
"According to the "Golden Light Sutra", this is the story of Buddha Sakyamuni's sacrifice in his previous life. One day, Buddha met a tigress that had just given birth to cubs in the bamboo forest. It may be that she lost too much blood after giving birth and lost her physical strength. Without support, it cannot hunt. And there are little tigers waiting to be fed beside the tigress. This tigress is hungry and cold, her body is weak, and her life is about to die. Seeing this, the kind-hearted Buddha showed great mercy and was willing to feed the tiger with his body. . But the tigress was too weak to bite food. What to do? There was no knife in her hand, so she cut the blood vessels on her arm with a sharp bamboo stick to drain out the hot blood. The tigress regained some strength after licking the hot blood, and finally Eat the Buddha until only a pile of bones is left."
After explaining the mural, Wu Xiaomei was so scared that she immediately hid behind Zhao Yun. Even the usually bold Murong Yunhai felt uncomfortable all over. Come on, judging from the situation, most people simply had no desire to go shopping.
