Chapter 73: First Visit to Lodz
After saying goodbye to the German family, Lin Yan took Sadie back to their new camp.
The location of the new camp was marked as Cape Clemens on the system map, a pointed land surrounded by water on three sides. This place was remote, far away from the main road of Lemoyne State, and surrounded by dense forests, so the safety here was one level higher than that of Horseshoe Lookout.
When he returned to the camp, Lin Yan saw Charles digging a pit under the small raised mound. The bodies of the enemies killed by them were neatly arranged one by one not far behind him.
The fifth pit had already been dug, and this one was about to be completed. Through simple visual inspection, he concluded that each pit was 1.7 meters long, half a meter wide, and about half a meter deep.
"Do you need help?" Lin Yan asked after getting off his horse.
Charles straightened up, wiped the sweat off his face with his sleeve and said, "Just help me throw these bodies into the dug pits. Don't fill each pit too full, otherwise the bodies will be easily exposed when it rains. Just put two or three, or three or four in one."
"Uh..." Actually, Lin Yan's original intention was to dig a hole for Charles. Dealing with the corpse was still a little difficult for him to accept.
Some of the bodies with gunshot wounds were fine, but the problem was that many of the bodies were shot in the head, and some even had their skulls opened, revealing jelly-like brains and grayish-white brain matter. It made one feel uncomfortable just by looking at them, let alone getting in close contact with them.
But now that he had said this, he had asked for help himself, so it would be a bit unfair to refuse now. So Lin Yan made up his mind and agreed readily: "No problem!"
While walking towards the row of corpses, Lin Yan frantically searched for the game settings button in the system menu. He wished the system could have an option to "block the bloody scenes". Unfortunately, no matter how he shouted in his heart, the red and white in front of him were still there.
Oh! Forget it... It seems that I can only pull my legs...
Sighing silently, Lin Yan walked to the feet of the corpse closest to him, bent down, grabbed his ankles, and dragged him step by step into the pit on the far left.
"These people are nothing like what they say they are, the Lemoyne Raiders."
Perhaps in order to get closer to Lin Yan, Charles spoke casually during the excavation.
"Ah?" Lin Yan didn't react for a moment whether Charles was talking to him, and subconsciously glanced at him.
Seeing Charles looking at him and realizing he was talking to him, Lin Yan hurriedly replied, "Why do you say that?"
Charles picked up the shovel again and said as he dug, "I heard that the Lemoyne Raiders were made up of a group of Confederate soldiers during the Civil War, but look at what they are wearing. Not to mention military uniforms, they don't even have anything related to the military on them."
Lin Yan squinted his eyes and threw a corpse with a rotten head into the pit, saying, "Maybe they don't want to reveal their identities."
As soon as he said this, he denied it himself. If they didn't want to reveal their identities, why did they say they were Lemoyne raiders during the battle?
"That doesn't make sense at all," Charles said. "Bill is from the army, even though he was expelled. Even though he's been out of the army for so long, his usual weapon is still a rifle. It's not easy to change the habit of using a gun. They were also soldiers, so even if not all of them use rifles, at least half of them do. But the result is that most people only have an old revolver, and very few people own a rifle."
“Could it be an outside member?”
"No." Charles stopped digging and climbed out of the pit. "The Lemoyne raiders are very exclusive. They won't accept anyone who hasn't served in the coalition army before."
"You mean, these people are just using the name of the Lemoyne Raiders to do bad things?" The conversation with Charles distracted Lin Yan's attention, so that he moved much faster than before.
"Yes." Charles pulled up a corpse that was close to him. "So if we encounter the Lemoyne Raiders again in the future, we must not underestimate their fighting power. They are a group of real soldiers who have been on the battlefield, but they are also a group of lawless lunatics who live in the past."
It turns out that Charles told me this just to remind me not to underestimate the Lemoyne raiders. It seems that he is a pretty good person...
Lin Yan silently labeled Charles in his heart as a good person who is worthy of close friendship.
"I've remembered that. Thank you for your reminder." He smiled at the other person with gratitude.
After throwing all the bodies into the dug pit, Charles took on the task of filling the pit, while Lin Yan and Sadie cleaned up the open space. They dismantled the two makeshift tents and threw them into the woods along with the oily sacks and old blankets on the ground.
Only when he was almost done did Lin Yan find a wooden box to sit on, took out his pocket watch and took a look at it.
It was already two o'clock in the afternoon, and not only had he not eaten lunch, but the other people in the gang were also starving like him. And because they had not bought food in the morning, they would continue to starve after the gang moved in without enough food.
Thinking of this, Lin Yan stood up again, put the pocket watch back into his pocket, and said solemnly: "Sadie, we didn't bring any food back this morning. I'm afraid there will be nothing to eat when everyone arrives later, so I want to go to a nearby town to buy some food first, at least to get everyone through today."
"Okay, I'll go with you." Sadie said nothing and went straight to her wild horse.
Lin Yan found Charles who was making arrows under a tree. After explaining the situation to him, he and Sadie walked out of the forest surrounding Cape Clemens and ran towards the nearest town, Rhodes.
Judging from the system map, the town of Rhodes is very close to Cape Clemens, and it only takes about ten minutes on horseback, which is much closer than the distance from Horseshoe Lookout to Valentine.
The closer he got to Lodz, the redder the soil became, and the less vegetation there was. It was not until he arrived at Lodz according to the markings on the map and saw the town of Lodz that he suddenly felt a sense of familiarity.
The dust and desolate scene would have been like something out of a western movie if it were accompanied by a few tumbleweeds.
Although Valentine with its muddy ground also fits the image of a small town in the American West in his mind, the most classic one is still the desolate town with dusty sky.
At the north entrance of the town of Rhodes stands a monument with a soldier holding a rifle carved on it. Lin Yan took a quick look and found that the monument was built to commemorate the 3202 federal soldiers who bravely sacrificed their lives.
Rhodes' grocery store was right next to the monument. In order to prevent everyone from starving, Lin Yan temporarily put aside his curiosity and bought some vegetables and seasonings at the grocery store. After finding out the location of the butcher shop, he bought some beef and then returned to Cape Clemens with the food.
