When I became a Jade-faced Fox

Chapter 5 Parents' Concerns

Li Nu and Qing Yu were meditating beside the fire. Madam Zi Shao put Yu Er down from her arms, leaned against her side, and patted Yu Er's back gently.

The fox king reached out to hold Madam Zishao's hand. Madam Zishao turned her body to one side and continued to coax Yu'er, quietly looking at Yu'er's sleeping face. The fox king forcefully picked up Madam Zishao and walked out of the cave. Madam Zishao almost screamed out, and when she was a distance away from the cave, she probably wouldn't disturb Yu'er, so she struggled.

"Put me down!" The lady shook her body, clenched her fists, and punched the fox king's chest.

"Shao'er," the Fox King couldn't resist and put her down, calling out.

"Hmph!" The lady still spoke angrily, looking down the mountain and turning her head away from the Fox King.

"How could I not love Yu'er?" The Fox King reached out and touched his wife's back.

"Yu'er loves to play and goes to see the mountain god whenever she sees him. But he is a selfless fool. He has made my daughter stupid. It's also my fault that I never thought that you wanted to lead her to the gods!" Upon hearing this, the lady turned around and stared at the Fox King with her eyes wide open, almost spitting fire, and said angrily.

"There is a saying that goes, 'Parents who love their children will always plan for them. You and I have been together for thousands of years, and we have been together for nearly a thousand years, and we have this one daughter. How can I not consider her?"

"She loves to play and freedom so much, why do you want her to join the God Class? What's wrong with being a free demon king like us?"

"Become a demon king like you and I, who are in such fear? You and I both know that the demon race is having a harder time, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to make progress in cultivation. If something happens to you and me, I will always ensure that she has a way out."

"How could it come to this! We have never done anything sneaky in our lives, but I have to send my daughter to be a fairy maid to serve others." The lady held her head high and shoulders shrugged, as if all the energy was immediately drained away, and she muttered.

"It won't come to that, and I won't allow it. Yu'er may seem naughty, but she is actually very smart. Although I haven't asked her, I know she knows her limits. Besides, there is still time. I will do my best to keep you and your child safe." The Fox King held his wife in his arms and spoke in a steady and serious tone.

The couple stood on the cliff, leaning against each other, without saying a word all night.

When the sun rose, reflecting the morning glow, the dew on the leaves and branches, and the air was naturally fresh, the couple turned back to the cave.

Yu'er hadn't woken up yet, and Li Nu was guarding Yu'er. Qingyu walked around the mountain to see if there was anything to eat. Suddenly, a burst of spiritual energy vibrated, attracting the attention of all creatures, big and small, on the entire mountain.

All that was heard was a long and ethereal deer cry, resounding through the sky. Yu'er wrinkled her nose and thought it sounded quite nice. It seemed that those fruits were quite useful to this new mountain god, and it was not wasted.

Thinking this in her heart, Yu'er clapped her hands and said, "That's good."

Looking outside, I saw a ray of sunlight coming down and heard a deep male voice echoing throughout the mountain.

"Congratulations to the God of Laji Mountain for obtaining the Mountain God Seal and attaining the position of God of Laji Mountain."

A white elk stood on the top of the mountain. At the moment when the sunset glowed, a puff of white smoke drifted by. The boy, who was about fourteen or fifteen years old, gradually grew up and became a young man in his twenties.

"He's grown up, he's grown up! When a god can grow up!"

Yu'er felt her eyes were about to turn red. She also wanted to grow up, but she just couldn't.

When the Fox King and his wife returned to the cave, they happened to hear what Yu'er said.

"What's so good about growing up?" the lady said.

"Oh, mother, this is not the time when you disliked me." Yu'er ran to her mother, raised her head, and said seriously.

"I wish you were still in your belly so that I wouldn't have to worry about you." The lady squatted down and stroked Yu'er's little head, her eyes full of tenderness.

"Then you just dislike me for causing you trouble, huh!" Yu'er hummed, with a slightly dissatisfied tone.

"I don't want to play with you anymore. I'm going out."

Yu'er said this as she walked towards the cave entrance without looking back.

"Yu'er is not a trouble. Only with you do I know what family happiness is. Mother wishes to be with you forever." The lady murmured, her voice so soft that no one could hear it except herself and the Fox King.

The Fox King hugged his wife, his eyes revealing heartache and helplessness. The helplessness and inability to do anything about his daughter's future made this man who seemed to be always high-spirited and energetic feel sad.

"Don't worry, even if you and I don't have the ability, we still have our ancestors. If it really doesn't work, we can hide in the clan land. The clan land is big enough for Yu'er to grow up well. Besides, how could it come to the worst situation?" The Fox King comforted his wife and joked.

Yuer ran to the mountain god temple again, peeked outside the temple, and called out to the mountain god softly, her voice so soft as if she was afraid of disturbing the mountain god.

The scene changed and they came to the mountain temple again. A young man in white was sitting cross-legged in front of him. He opened his eyes, his eyes were clear and there was a smile on his lips.

"Yu'er, we meet again."

"Hey, I didn't tell you my name is Yu'er, how did you hear it? Did you hear my parents calling me?" Yu'er was very surprised, her amber eyes widened.

"This is just a small ability I have gained from the position of Mountain God. I can observe and hear everything that happens on the mountain. And thank you! The fruit you sent is very useful. If I practiced on my own, I'm afraid it would take some time before I could master the Mountain God Seal."

"You're welcome. You're awesome now!"

The Mountain God shook his head and explained: "No, this is the ability brought by the Mountain God position. My own magic power is just enough to start using the Mountain God Seal."

"You mean, because you have attained the status of mountain god, the whole mountain belongs to you, and you are the whole mountain, so you know everything that happens on the mountain. But your magical power is still insufficient, and you are still restricted when performing your duties."

"You're right, Yu'er is really smart, and what you said is absolutely right." The mountain god smiled and nodded, with some kindness in his eyes.

Yu'er felt goose bumps all over her body. The day before, they looked like brother and sister who were a few years apart in age, but today, they seemed to be a generation apart. This feeling was indeed a bit weird.

"What are the duties of the mountain god?" Yu'er asked while sitting on a stool, swinging her short legs.

"The mountain god is the spirit in charge of a mountain. The birth, aging, sickness, death, prosperity and decline of this mountain and the creatures on it are all under my control. I also try my best to ensure the safety of hunters who enter the mountain. If I have time, I might as well talk to you about the duties of Fude Zhengshen - the land god. He is in charge of many things, and they are all trivial."

Yu'er listened attentively, this was knowledge that both lives were curious about but unknown to them!

"First, the land god gives birth to all things, so people have to thank the land god every time they sow and harvest; second, he manages the local area (every living being has its own land god); third, he manages the household registration of the dead and guides the dead."

"Wow! The land god is so powerful!" Yu'er exclaimed. Originally, influenced by Journey to the West, she thought that the mountain gods and land gods were the lowest gods, not respected, and had no power. She didn't expect that they could do so many things. It was really unexpected.

Suddenly, Yu'er noticed the bell in her hand ringing.

"Mountain God, I'm leaving. My parents are calling me. We should be leaving soon too. We'll meet again if we're lucky."

Yu'er stood up to say goodbye, and the mountain god watched her leave.
