"Everything moves by itself when you observe it quietly." The ancients had such a feeling long ago, and I deeply understand it. Sometimes when I pick up a small stone, I feel that I have mastered the whole world. Each stone has its own unique texture and its own history of tens of millions of years. Each shell has once been home to a small life, which so skillfully built its own home, then abandoned it, died, slept on the seabed for thousands of years, and was accidentally washed up on the beach. Every bird appears early, but disappears at night. They all have their own home and their own love. Every insect is the same, some hide under the leaves, some hide in the flowers, some burrow into the fruit, and some hide in the soil. They each occupy their own territory, as if they had already tacitly shared the world. In the process of observing them, I not only get the benefits of relaxing and cultivating my character, but also have a better understanding of nature. I feel that every creature is so wise, and I respect them more and feel that I am insignificant. In the late summer of 1995, I caught a praying mantis and recorded its "life and daily life" as usual. The praying mantis is one of the few insects that can be kept as a "pet". I found food for it, treated its illness, and even found a mate for it. I developed a deep relationship with it and learned many things from it that I had never thought of before. In North America, most praying mantises will freeze to death in early November. My praying mantis was pampered indoors, so of course it lived longer. With the careful care of my whole family, it not only survived the New Year and lived until 1996, but also did not die until early February. I held a small funeral for it and called the Guinness World Records Museum to ask if they could include this long-lived praying mantis in the record. Although they later told me that it was not possible, it inspired me to have another idea - to write a book for the praying mantis based on my daily diary. The writing started in August. It can also be said that I started writing half a year after it died. During this period, I hesitated for a long time, fearing that I was not capable of writing such a book. I also hesitated whether to use this book to present my spiritual world to readers. Although it is a record of the life of a praying mantis, this book is really my "random thoughts". It can also be said that it is a variety of associations generated by observing mantises. Because it is "random thoughts", there is almost no limit to the chatter. I once wondered whether readers would be impatient with this kind of subject matter and whether they would scold me for talking nonsense in the middle of the creation. But then I comforted myself: "No matter what, I dare to write a book for a mantis, and this "test" can be considered a success." In my past 25 years of writing career, I would publish a tentative "game work" every once in a while. From the early "Firefly Window Essays" and "True Tranquility" to the recent "Dream of Flying", they are all "private books" that record my soul. The starting point is "only to entertain myself, not to entertain others". It is also with this idea of ​​"only to entertain myself" that I completed these 180,000 words in three consecutive months. And because the theme revolves around a mantis devouring its own kind, it is named "The True Story of the Killer". In terms of writing skills, I adopted the method of irony, that is, positive words are said in an opposite way. I know that most readers can see it at a glance. The reason I bring it up here is that I am afraid that some younger friends may mistake my "negative words" for "positive views" and distort my meaning.
