The next morning was bright and warm. The sky was incredibly blue and the clouds looked extra fluffy. It was as if the storm had never happened and the sky was always calm.

But the scene was in chaos. There were branches everywhere, and many crops and shops were overturned. Because Lanbei is a prosperous city, people worked quickly. From the first hour of sunrise, people immediately started to clean up the environment.

However, only servants and people of the lower classes worked. The rich and wealthy lived in their spacious estates and enjoyed breakfast. This was true for almost every family, except for the prominent Lee family.

Duke Li had finished his breakfast and was about to leave the palace. He was in his room, and the servant was dressing him.

His cold eyes softened as they fell on his sullen wife. She sat by the window, her eyes looking off into the distance. Her chin rested on her arm, a gloomy look on her face.

Duke Li sighed as he looked at his wife's melancholy face. He said softly, "Wife, it's not good to stay in the room..."

After the servants had dressed him, he walked over to his wife, and immediately put his arm around her fragile shoulders to provide her with warmth.

“Where are you going?” Her voice was hoarse, almost below a whisper. A few weeks ago, she cried all night because of her daughter’s death, and her voice was destined to be broken.

“The city government is working very hard to clean the streets. Our servants are also working very hard to clear the branches and fallen trees from the ground. I will check on their progress,” Li Gong said to his wife.

She didn't look at him. Instead, she continued to stare off into the distance.

Duke Li felt a pang of pain when he saw his wife in a trance. When their daughter's body was found in the lake, they were heartbroken. Someone had murdered their precious daughter, who was only seventeen years old.

Duke Li recovered slowly, and more quickly than his wife. Duchess Li was devastated by the death of her daughter. She tenderly raised the child with her own hands.

Most noble ladies would have handed their children over to a wet nurse or nanny, but Duchess Lee did not. She kept her only daughter by her side. She was the first to respond when the baby cried at night. She was the one to change the baby's clothes when the baby wet or soiled itself. She fed the baby herself when the baby was hungry.

This was extremely rare for a noblewoman with a distinguished family background and high status, but she didn't care. Duchess Li loved her daughter too much to let another woman deal with her.

Duchess Lee gave birth to two more sons a few years after her daughter. She has healthy twins who are now nine years old. But the mother never got over the death of her precious daughter. No mother ever gets over such a tragic and unknown death.

"I'll be back soon, and then we can go to Lanbei for a walk, how about that?" Li Gong asked his wife gently. After a few seconds of hesitation, she nodded slowly.

"Our sons will join us after they finish their morning classes," Li Gong added. His lovely wife nodded slowly. Her eyes lit up slightly when she mentioned her sons.

Seeing her little reaction, Li Gong felt very sad, but he had no other way to make her happy. It seemed that time was the only way to heal her. Just as Li Gong bent down and kissed his wife gently on the cheek, the sound of servants running came from the hall.

King Li stopped kissing, raised his head and walked towards the door. "Open it." He said to the eunuch guarding the door. The eunuch nodded immediately and pushed the door open.

A breathless girl stood outside the door. When she saw Master Li and Princess Li, she immediately bowed her head.

“Hello—”

"What is it?" Li Gong went straight to the point. His tone was calm, but with a hint of irritation. He hated to be disturbed, especially when he was with his wife. But the matter must be urgent for the servant to risk his life.

"The body of an unconscious girl was found behind a tree at the edge of the forest." The servant stammered in his pants.

King Li frowned in curiosity when he heard her words. A girl was found at the edge of the forest? Why would a girl walk into the forest, especially in a muddy forest, and when there was a storm the night before?

"This is the edge closer to the Li Mansion, and this matter cannot be ignored." The servant added. When she was talking to her master, she never dared to raise her head. Instead, she kept it very low.

Hearing this, Li Gong sighed. "I'll be back, dear," he said to his wife. She didn't say anything, just continued to look out the window. He forced a dry laugh and quickly kissed her on the cheek.

He walked towards the servant and followed her out the door.

"This day is really tiring." Li Gong thought to himself. As expected, this day would be long and arduous...
