The most powerful wizard in the magic world
Chapter 41: Influential Characters
Green's heart was like a bad day, with dark clouds gathering. He sat quietly in the center of the laboratory, surrounded by various instruments and chemicals. These things that once excited him, now became shackles in his heart. His eyes swept into the depths of the laboratory from time to time, and a trace of uneasiness passed through his heart. That was Gerling - a person with unlimited power and great influence in the scientific community.
"Green," a deep voice interrupted his thoughts. Green walked slowly into the laboratory, and the shadow behind him seemed to compress the entire space even more. "Are you ready for today's experiment?"
Green stood up, trying to hide his inner fluctuations. He coughed slightly and responded, "I have prepared all the materials. But... I still have some doubts about the safety of this experiment."
The corners of Gerling's mouth curled up into an inscrutable smile, as if he was evaluating a useless toy. "You mean, ['safety']? Green, I have no interest in this word. Science always comes with risks."
"But... we are trying a technology that has never been used before." Green's voice trembled a little. Although he knew that Gerling's strength was as heavy as a mountain, he still wanted to argue. "If the experiment fails, it may lead to unforeseen consequences."
“Unforeseen consequences?” Gelling raised his eyebrows and said half sarcastically, “Let me tell you, true scientists are never afraid of the unknown. On the contrary, the unknown is the driving force that pushes us forward.”
“I understand your point, but we cannot ignore the ethical issues at this stage.” Green felt a sense of oppression. He knew he was in an unequal game. The suffocating sense of authority behind Gelling was as huge as a hill.
"Ethics?" Gerling sneered, his eyes deep and sinister. "Too many people are obsessed with the disguise of morality, but real science is material, it is the data and facts of the experiment. What we need is the results, not the discussion of so-called morality."
Green took a deep breath and tried to make his voice sound firm. "But, Gerling, if our experimental results are used incorrectly, how much impact will it have on society? We need to be responsible for this."
"Are you questioning my ability?" Gerling's voice gradually rose, like thunder. His face looked particularly ferocious in the dim light, revealing an almost fanatical obsession.
"That's not what I meant," Green hastily defended himself, his body involuntarily taking a few steps back and leaning against the cold metal wall of the laboratory. "What I meant was that the value of science lies in serving humanity, not in becoming a tool in the hands of a few people."
Gellin's gaze pierced Green's heart like a knife. The moment of silence made the air more solemn. It was as if time had stopped at this moment, and the surrounding equipment was watching this conflict.
"You are a smart man," Gelling finally spoke, his voice becoming gentle but dangerous, "but smart people also need to know how to submit. Science is not just an individual, but a concentration of power. You have to understand how naive these ethical arguments are in the face of power."
Green couldn't bear such psychological pressure. He knew he had to stick to a bottom line. He bit his teeth tightly and finally decided to remain silent. He didn't answer again, but a strong disgust and sadness rose in his heart.
"Let the experiment begin," Gelling sighed, waving his hand to signal Green to continue. "No matter what you think, the experiment must continue. This is the path we are on."
"Don't let me down." Gerling's voice was like a ghost in the dark night, eerie and distant.
Green nodded. Although his inner resistance surged like a tide, he knew he had no choice. In front of Gerling, any resistance was futile. As the experiment progressed, the tension in the air gradually increased, and time seemed to freeze at this moment.
"Start!" Gerling ordered coldly, his eyes fixed on Green the whole time, like a lurking cheetah, ready to pounce on its prey at any time. Green's fingers trembled slightly as he pressed the start button.
With the roar of machines and the flickering of lights, the entire laboratory seemed to be shrouded in a strange atmosphere, and all the instruments began to operate. The air was filled with the unique sour smell of the laboratory, and Green's heartbeat was like thunder, shaking his soul.
"Green, why are your predictions so pessimistic?" Gelling's voice was now joking. "This is exactly the great experiment you wanted, isn't it?"
"Yes, but I..." Green's words stopped abruptly. He saw that the experimental data continued to rise, approaching his moral bottom line. Whether he succeeded or failed, he could not escape this vortex of power.
"Go on," Gellin ordered with a hint of impatience. "Don't let me down. If you want to push this experiment to a higher level, you must learn to be fearless."
The equipment in the laboratory continued to send out fierce alarms, warning of countless hidden dangers. Green felt the pressure coming like a tide, the shadows around him became heavier, and the doubts and concerns in his mind began to interweave into an invisible picture.
"This isn't right." Green muttered to himself, his fingers already moving on the device, trying to adjust the data. "We have to stop..."
"Stop?" Garlin roared, like a beast out of a cage. "You have no idea what you are doing! This is a technology that can change the world. Are you willing to watch it be abandoned like this?"
"No," Green felt an unprecedented despair, "but what we need is caution, not blindness."
"Enough!" he yelled, his voice like thunder, instantly breaking the silence of the laboratory. For a moment, Green felt that his heart was about to jump out of his chest. He wondered in his heart whether he had lost himself in this endless experiment?
Is this experiment for the advancement of science, or an endless desire for power? As the experimental data becomes unstable, Green knows that they may be standing on a seemingly bright but extremely dangerous edge.
