Chapter 48 The True and False Basilisk

Harry hadn't seen it, and neither had most of the students.Because the first person to find out was a fourth-year student in the protection of magical creatures class, Professor Kettleburn immediately sent the Hufflepuff and Slytherin students back to the castle, and then called other people to deal with the matter thing.By the time this matter spread, the snake slough had already been transferred.

The incident left everyone in class on Friday, and discussed it all weekend.According to eyewitnesses, the slough was "unimaginably large" and "looks like it could swallow several people in one bite."Since there were more than one witnesses, it's not an exaggeration - so, the question is, what snake can grow to that extent?

Most people thought it must be some amazing prank because they couldn't figure out what it was. After a few days passed, without any follow-up incidents, everyone felt more relieved and waited for the announcement of the professors' research results.Of course, these people did not include the three of Harry, and Hermione easily got the approval to enter the restricted-book area from Lockhart who boasted that he had once dealt with a snake much larger than this .

"Sure enough, there are recorded snakes," Hermione pointed to the page in her hand, and said bluntly, "there is only one that meets the standard."

At this time, the three of them were in the library, trying to find the answer to this question in books. There were only two, to be exact, and Harry had only come along to keep things under wraps.Hearing her words, Ron stuck his head over and almost screamed, but he covered his mouth just in time. "Are you kidding me? Basilisk?" He stared at Hermione in horror.

"No, I think it's absolutely true." Hermione waved her hand, looking stern. "I surreptitiously asked the Hufflepuff students, and all the details they remembered fit the description of the basilisk."

"Well, now we know that there is a basilisk in the Forbidden Forest?" said Harry. "Then why haven't I heard of it before? I only heard of centaurs and unicorns in it." The slough was Voldemort, of course. The basilisk stayed there on purpose, and he felt that the other party's purpose was to cause panic, so he deliberately spoke in a very suspicious tone.

"Sloughing doesn't mean the basilisk is there," Hermione replied, taking a breath.

"But you just said...?" Ron interrupted hastily, with two drops of cold sweat on his forehead.

"What I said was that the snake slough belonged to a basilisk." Hermione said with a serious tone. Her face was pale, and she was not afraid, but she was obviously rational. "Not that there was a live basilisk in there. In fact, I've searched every book in the library that I could find, and it says that the basilisk was unseen centuries ago—of course ( She curtly stifled what Ron was about to say), and anyone who saw its eyes was dead, but neither were anyone who saw its scales."

Ron looked calmer. "That is to say, it may be dead? Or, someone put it there on purpose? Or, what they saw was not the real basilisk's slough at all?"

"It's all possible," said Hermione, "but I think the only thing we can be sure of is that someone must have put it there on purpose - there have never been any sightings of basilisks in the Forbidden Forest. You know, if there were any Such a dangerous animal, then Hagrid should have seen it long ago."

"He...wouldn't want to raise one, would he?" Ron broke out in another drop of cold sweat.

Harry wanted to say something, but now found that Hermione had finished all he could say.Although not everyone can guess the truth, Hermione who can guess the truth only by hearing the news is really amazing.

"Looks like there's only one brain in Gryffindor," Voldemort commented in Harry's head. "I think Miss Know-It-All is a great compliment."

On the one hand Harry was very proud of Hermione, but on the other hand he felt that he was seriously underestimated in this sentence. But thinking about how he knew it, and how Hermione knew it, he had to admit it. "As much as I'd like to say thank you for her, I don't think she'd like a compliment from the Dark Lord." He finally found the counterpoint.

Voldemort chuckled, but made no rebuttal. "I have to say, I originally thought that Dumbledore was the only one with some brains in Gryffindor, and he was not such a pure Gryffindor. But now, this impression has been refreshed."

Harry was always happy to hear people praise Hermione, but when the words came out of Voldemort's mouth, he had to suspect that the other party had something up his sleeve. "What the hell are you trying to say?" he asked slightly wary, "Don't try to do anything to Hermione! Besides, what does it mean not to be a pure Gryffindor?"

"Oh, I just said it casually, don't be so nervous." Voldemort's voice was filled with a smile. The savior will immediately turn into a calf-protecting, fried-haired old hen on certain issues, and he probably doesn't realize it himself. "A pure Gryffindor should be like you, reckless, passionate, impulsive, and prone to trouble. Are you satisfied with this answer?"

Harry blushed, unable to refute the assessment about himself.Although he has always wanted to get rid of this type of adjective, it seems that he has not succeeded so far. "Isn't that because you have to make such a fuss at the end?" Anan let the basilisk leave quietly, isn't everything gone?

"But you see, people don't think it's true," said Voldemort tactfully. "It's just a little bit of fun for them."

Harry had nothing to say.He remembered what Dumbledore had said about Voldemort's skill in creating conflict and hostility. This time he threw the snake slough in the Forbidden Forest, but what if he put it in the castle? The opponent obviously didn't play to the extreme this time, at least for ordinary students. But Voldemort can't do useless work... Even Hermione doesn't know if the snake slough is something left by the basilisk. But it is certainly impossible to hide this from the professors...

"Professor Dumbledore will know for sure," said Harry dryly, feeling as if he had guessed where this was going.Dumbledore was well-informed, and it was absolutely impossible not to recognize the snake slough; and Snape was even more so. If he couldn't recognize a precious potion ingredient, it would be as impossible as Merlin's resurrection.

In the history of modern magic and even in the history of medieval magic, there is no record of basilisks; the legend of the chamber of secrets at Hogwarts is just a legend, and it is not even sure whether there is a chamber of secrets, and no one knows what will be in the chamber of secrets. When the legend turned out to be true...Harry could almost foresee the beleaguered professors. The secret room cannot be found by anyone other than the two of them, because opening it requires Parseltongue; and this also means that no matter how nervous and worried other people are, they will not find anything useful, let alone the basilisk. Already gone, even Dumbledore couldn't find it.

"You just want him to know, don't you? And Professor Snape?" Harry asked through gritted teeth. "Aren't you worried that they will reveal the truth to the public?"

"So you are a pure Gryffindor, and Dumbledore is not." Voldemort was not surprised by his questioning. "I thought you should have known that Dumbledore would take everything he knew to steer things the way he wanted; he'd tell you what to do, but he wouldn't start Tell you why you did it."

This silenced Harry. He had to admit that it was true.He originally wanted to refute that Voldemort was not qualified to blame others in this matter, but he was not the one who ordered the other party. "But Professor Dumbledore is for everyone's benefit." He finally said, his tone firm.

Voldemort didn't answer.During the time Harry was silent, he realized that he had said it too soon, and probably probably shouldn't have said it at all.Harry was prone to being impulsive and wrong, it was true, but there were certain issues where he would never change his position.Such as defending Dumbledore in front of other people, such as when he is lying under the chair...

Voldemort stopped his recollection. In any case, breaking up with Harry would do more harm than good at this point. This is not weak consolation and sympathy, but a process that must be endured in order to achieve the goal, just like before when he was not strong enough, he said to himself in his heart.

By this time, Ron and Hermione had already discussed whether Hagrid would want to raise a basilisk to whether the professors would discover something they didn't know.During this period, Harry was silent for so long that it attracted the attention of others.

"Why aren't you talking, Harry?" Ron asked suspiciously. "You don't look well?"

Hermione snapped the books shut, probably thinking that the subject of basilisks made Harry uncomfortable. "Whatever it is, the professors will figure it out," she said firmly. "I'll return the books, and then it's time for homework."

Harry nodded curtly. He was grateful to Hermione for finding such an excuse, because he really wasn't in the mood to make up lies right now.Even if he and Voldemort cannot harm each other with magic, it is definitely an appearance that they can live in peace.Perhaps the current situation is better than before, but that is probably also because of the existence of the prerequisite for the God of Death. He told himself countless times that since he promised death, he was ready.Whether it is suspicion or a frontal war, he will not back down. But when conflicts do arise, even if they are only a small head, it also makes him feel upset.

But this shouldn't happen, Harry told himself. Now that you have chosen such a path, you should be prepared to succeed and fail at the same time.He hopes to achieve his goal this time, and also has the courage to take up arms again.

A few days later, Dumbledore announced before dinner that the slough was a fake. This fully confirmed Voldemort's prediction, but rather than causing unnecessary panic, he must have chosen other more appropriate expressions. When he said that, everyone in the teacher's seat looked very solemn, except for Lockhart.

The snake slough incident was dismissed as a false alarm. And Harry heard the next day that the snake slough was a poor quality product, so that it turned into powder within three days after putting it away.In the days that followed, Snape looked particularly gloomy.

Harry thought it was probably because Voldemort had tampered with the snake's slough, such as a timed self-destruct spell or something, but he didn't check with the other party on this matter.

And in the silence of the two, Valentine's Day came.
