Hogwarts White Knight

Chapter 13 Humble Gawain

At least in Gawain's own opinion, his first experience with magic was undoubtedly a successful practice.

He could feel the magic and warmth of that silver light, which represented that he had taken the crucial first step on the road to becoming a wizard.

if only...

Don't think about the fact that the biggest function of this magic spell is to create a "never wear out" cat teasing stick.

"Um?!"

Gawain was frightened by Abyss who suddenly threw himself into his arms. He lowered his head subconsciously and caught this guy who was a little excited because he saw the "funny cat...fluorescence flashing", and the fluorescence dimmed.

But it is clearly written in the book that if the "fluorescent flash" is no longer needed for lighting, the counter-spell "Nox" needs to be used to turn it off.

Rather than being slapped on the forehead or being startled by a cat.

"Is it because the contact was suddenly cut off?"

Holding Abyss in his lap, Gawain thought as he scraped its chin with his fingers.

Just now, he was so dazed for a moment that he couldn't connect with that wonderful perception.

"Maybe there will be a record in the book."

Following the light spell just now, he looked carefully. Unfortunately, he didn't find the answer until the end.

The book is vague about this aspect, except for the words "or use other methods" after "nox" as a counter-spell.

"But if I had known that, I would still be reading this book?!"

Gawain could only put the problem aside for the time being.

Of course, although the question has not been answered, it does not mean that Gawain learned nothing. He had a clearer understanding of the spell itself and how to use it.

"I didn't expect that in addition to the simplest uses of magic spells, there are so many tricks."

Gawain recorded carefully, using a pencil to mark the places he thought were important.

Magic is not as easy as sitting cross-legged on the bed, closing your eyes, and silently reciting some strange things, and then magical energy will be entrenched in the body, which can be knocked out with a "pia".

It's actually a lot more complicated.

Not only do you need to exhale the spell in a specific way, but you also need to truly believe that the effect of the spell will occur, so that the power of magic can be aroused and the spell can take effect.

“Is it closer to ‘what you think, so it happens’?”

Gawain thought and wrote down "will to power" in his notes, which reminded him of the records in Genesis.

——There needs to be light, so there is light.

Of course, according to the standards recorded in the book, by making movements and shouting the right spells, as long as the wizard is not really stupid enough to look like a giant monster, he can make something from the top of the wand.

But if you want the spell to be more precise and effective, you need to use some techniques.

"For example, to expand the range of the light spell and increase the brightness, you can attach xi to the spell. Or you can make the clear water like a spring form multiple streams of water, and float the spell to a specific height..."

Perhaps because it involves techniques that are not allowed to be disclosed, this kind of knowledge is not clearly defined and systematically explained in the book. Sometimes the method of use is not even recorded, but the case is simply recorded as "fyi" for reference.

For example, "On a certain day of a certain year, a certain wizard used only a floating spell to save eight wizards who fell from a flying carpet from a dragon attack."

Or "The repairing spell can be used for damage caused by spells that cannot be repaired after adjustment."

"But what if we want to be more precise?"

Gawain wrote a scrawled question mark on the paper. He did not think that this was the limit of the curse.

"What if I want the fluorescent light ball to have a specific brightness, or to have it appear at a specific distance from the tip of the wand? Or, let's say, multiple light balls appear at the same time and extinguish one after another at a scheduled time?"

He thought of an idea, wrote it down in his notebook, and finally drew it in a circle.

Even the compiler of the textbook, Miranda Gorshak herself, had not thought of such a division.

But Gawain, who came from the world of ordinary people, and the wizard who seemed to him to be a little too arrogant, had different thinking.

"But at least try xi first."

Gawain raised his wand and drew a light curve in the air.

"(fluorescence) xi."

Along with Gawain's words, a silver ball of light shone in his room, and that distant connection was established again. This time he hugged the abyss on his legs in advance and was not startled by it again.

The spell was undoubtedly successful.

But Gawain failed.

Even if the suffix xi is added, the effect of fluorescent flashing does not change.

He tried several times in succession, each time making slight adjustments to the action of waving the wand, but the light mass remained unchanged.

Same bright, same silver, same...

Funny cats.

"According to what the book says, adding this suffix will significantly enhance the brightness of the spell, right?"

Gawain drew three circles on his notebook and held down the cat, which was dissatisfied because the cat-teasing stick suddenly disappeared.

"It's probably not the problem with the curse itself...it shouldn't be."

He made a cross on the first circle.

Gawain was convinced that his articulation was clear, his pronunciation was accurate, and he had an authentic London accent, and it was impossible to copy the spell wrong.

"Then the movements are not standard? Impossible."

He made another fork.

Although no adult wizard showed it in front of him, the book clearly mentioned that the strength of the wand's upward and downward swing affects the intensity of the effect.

"Put more or less salt so that the soup won't disappear."

Gawain once again eliminated a possible cause, leaving only one option before him.

"I don't believe that the magic spell will work? But even 'that one' believes it. If I don't believe it, doesn't it mean that I am arrogant enough to be stronger than the omniscient and omnipotent person?

And the spell did take effect. "

Shaking his head, Gawain crossed out the last circle.

But he still didn't find the reason.

"I must have missed something..."

Gawain caresses the abyss and talks to himself. The black cat purred, its round, furry little head burrowing straight into his palm.

"If I knew what it was, I wouldn't say I missed it... Wait, it seems I really missed something."

Suddenly a thought flashed through his mind like lightning, and Gawain quickly turned to the opening page of "Standard Spells: Elementary".

A very boring story is told there.

The protagonist of the story is Miranda Gorshak, the editor of the book. When she was a student, she found it difficult to get her sisters to listen carefully to her ideas, so she sometimes chose to use the bat spirit spell she invented to solve the problem.

——Let them remain silent for a while to give themselves enough time to speak. This was what ultimately led her to start compiling the series of textbooks.

But what interests Gawain is not this aspect, but that this spell was invented by herself. At that time, she simply wanted to shut up her sister, Tomvist, so she used this spell.

"Is it because... I believe that the magic spell itself will be effective, not that the magic spell with xi will be effective?"

Gawain felt that he was approaching the essence.

Or at least something close.

ps: nox is the goddess of the night, which means night in Latin. xi is also Latin, which can be understood as maximizing and strengthening, and it often appears in the original work.

pps: Miranda Gorshak's information comes from the official potterre document. If anyone is interested, you can leave a message and I will put it in the work-related section.
